1. WELCOME: The Alumni Association Cabinet Looks Ahead

8. DID YOU KNOW: Baseball Has a Long History at WPI

This year, WPI's varsity baseball program celebrates its 100th birthday; officially, the program started in the 1904-05 academic year. But did you know that baseball at WPI predates its "birth date" by more than 30 years? According to "Seventy Years at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute," in 1870 baseball was the first athletic team organized at the university. "It was pretty much a scrub outfit with little equipment and no coaching," wrote author Herbert Foster Taylor. "The nine played against high-school teams, its only collegiate opponent being Holy Cross, and this team was met but once or twice. Class baseball flourished and there was much rivalry in the contests." Members of the 1906 and 1907 classes were responsible for introducing baseball as a varsity sport at WPI.
