Imagine and Achieve: The Future of WPI
Join President Dennis D. Berkey for a conversation about the future of WPI. Guests will have the opportunity to mingle, enjoy a video of WPI today, and register for WPI’s new alumni online community. Events are currently scheduled in three cities:

New Personnel for Development & Alumni Relations
Judi Taylor Cantor joined WPI as executive director of planned giving. Cantor comes to WPI with more than 20 years of experience in fund-raising, marketing, and public relations. She has raised more than $120 million during her career. Read Cantor's bio.
In addition, as part of WPI’s commitment to providing more effective programming and services to its alumni community, the Career Development Center (CDC) plans to add a full-time Assistant/Associate Director of Career Development Services this year. This new position will serve as an important bridge between the Office of Alumni Relations and the Career Development Center.
Class of 1987 Reunion at Homecoming 2007
The Class of 1987 will be celebrating its 20th reunion on Sept. 29, at Homecoming. A conference call has been scheduled for Jan. 17 for anyone who is interested in helping to plan and organize the 20th reunion activities. WPI to Offer Nation's First Robotics Engineering Degree
Starting in the fall of 2007, WPI students can select a new robotics major offered jointly by the Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering departments. "Robotics is one the fastest growing areas of technology and has the potential to change many aspects of our world and greatly improve human life," notes provost Carol Simpson. "Meeting this challenge requires an approach to engineering education that crosses academic boundaries, since no single discipline can provide the necessary breadth." Learn more.
A Silver Hammer for WPI
WPI and the Worcester Business Development Corp. (WBDC) received the Silver Hammer Award from the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce for their efforts to preserve a historic building as part of the construction of the Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park in Worcester. First Year Dean Appointed
Professor Arthur Heinricher (Mathematical Sciences) has been appointed associate dean for the First Year Experience. The new position was created as a result of a commission of faculty, students, and staff established by President Berkey in 2004 to examine the first year program. At WPI since 1992, Heinricher has shown great interest and creativity in innovative pedagogical approaches for the early college years. Read more.
WPI Opens New Art Gallery
The stairwell leading from the first floor of Salisbury Labs to the Department of Humanities and Arts has been transformed into a gallery space. The inaugural exhibit (Jan. 5-June 11) features the work of Worcester artist Brian Burris, on loan from ArtsWorcester. Read more.

A commentary by Profs. Gretar Tryggvason and Diran Apelian in JOM: The Member Journal of TMS (the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society) calls for a major re-examination of engineering education to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Read the journal article.
Professor Jonathan Barnett was featured as a fire protection engineering expert in an Associated Press article about a major arson investigation in Pennsylvania. The article ran in major newspapers across the country. Read the article.
