Imagine and Achieve: Hartford, Conn.
On July 25, WPI is pleased to present Imagine and Achieve: The Future of WPI, a town hall event in which President Berkey will speak about the future of the university. Guests will have the opportunity to share their ideas and view a video of WPI today. A reception with beverages and passed hors d'oeuvres will round out the evening. WPI in Your Neighborhood: Colorado
A team of 2007 WPI graduates will be presenting their MQP, "Demographic Preferences in Web Design," on Aug. 12, at the Americas Conference on Information Systems in Keystone, Colo. John Bosch, Joseph Hsu, Erin Mazuera, Kelly Osberg, and Thomas Tullis, with assistant professor of management Soussan Djamasbi as advisor, used eye-tracking experiments to investigate gender and age differences in the effectiveness of web bricklets. Pops by the Sea
Join the Office of Alumni Relations on Aug. 5, at Banknorth Pops by the Sea at the Hyannis Village Green. Gates open at 1 p.m., and local musical groups perform on the pre-show stage from 2 to 4. We suggest making a day of the event, allowing you to enjoy the music, food, and festive atmosphere. The performance by the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, with conductor Keith Lockhart and guest conductor Ray Romano, begins at 5 p.m. and concludes 7. Berkey Elected Vice Chairman of AICUM
President Dennis Berkey has been elected to serve a one-year term as vice chairman of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM), the organization charged with preserving and strengthening the commonwealth's institutions of higher learning. Read more...
Prof. Apelian on History Channel
The History Channel’s "Modern Marvels: Aluminum" features Howmet Professor of Mechanical Engineering Diran Apelian, director of WPI's Metal Processing Institute (MPI). The Modern Marvels crew spent a day filming on the WPI campus. The episode is scheduled to air on July 25, at 10 p.m. EDT, with repeats as determined by the network. Previous History Channel programs have included interviews with FPE faculty and Steven Bullock, professor of history and an authority on the history of Freemasonry in the United States. Read more...
WPI Shines at ASEE Conference
WPI faculty and staff made prominent contributions at the American Society for Engineering Education annual conference in July, where more than 12,000 deans, department heads, faculty members, and students at universities around the nation gathered to share new approaches for educating the engineering workforce of the future. Among the papers presented were nine written by 14 WPI faculty and staff members and one current student. Seven of those papers were published in the conference proceedings, and two were nominated for a Best Paper award. Read more...
McNeil, Sisson Honored with Chairman's Exemplary Faculty Prizes
Two outstanding faculty members have received the inaugural Chairman's Exemplary Faculty Prize. Established through the personal philanthropy of Board of Trustees chair Donald K. Peterson '71, the prize honors WPI faculty members for overall excellence. Two prizes, each in the amount of $10,000, were presented during WPI's 2007 Commencement exercises to John A. McNeill, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Richard D. Sisson Jr., George F. Fuller Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Read more...
Kalenian Award Funds Bone Disorder Treatment
Albert Prescott '90, president of Worcester-based biomedical company Crescent Innovations, is the recipient of the second 2007 Kalenian Award, which grants $25,000 in seed money to WPI students, alumni and faculty to support innovative ideas or the development of commercial products. The award was established by the family of the late entrepreneur Aram Kalenian '33. Crescent Innovations Inc. was founded in 2000 to develop products to treat TMJ disorders, degenerative joint disease, bone disease, fractures, and more, using proprietary polymer technology.
