Albert J. Schwieger Award for Professional Achievement: 2004 Recipient
Arthur M. Quitadamo SIM '72
Arthur Quitadamo, you distinguished yourself during a long and successful career in the banking industry. Nearly two decades of that career was spent at Shawmut Bank-Worcester, formerly Worcester County National Bank, where you rose through the ranks to become a senior vice president before your retirement in 1991.
After joining the bank's international department in 1973 as an assistant vice president, you assumed positions of increasing responsibility that called upon you to manage the institution's domestic and international credit extension activity. Your many contributions to these important areas of the bank's operation led eventually to your promotion to vice president.
Your exposure to the intricacies of finance and business began at Crompton & Knowles Corp., one of the city's oldest and most distinguished companies. During your 18 years with the firm, you held various positions in the accounting department, supervising such functions as domestic and international credit and collection, culminating with your promotion to credit manager.
In addition to your many professional achievements, you have made a point of serving the greater Worcester community. For example, you have served as director of the Worcester Family Health and Social Services Corp. and the city's Alliance for Education. In your hometown of Shrewsbury, you served as a member of its Finance Committee, which you chaired for eight years, and as a member of the design and building committee for the town's senior center.
A graduate of North High School in Worcester and the Massachusetts Military Academy in Boston, you earned an associate's degree from Worcester Junior College, and in 1974 you graduated from WPI's School of Industrial Management. Your service in the U.S. Army Reserve was capped in 1989 with your retirement as a major.
Your family has always been a special source of pride for you. In 2002, you and your wife, Gladys, celebrated your 50th wedding anniversary. Together, you are the parents of five children, who have blessed you with eight grandchildren.
Arthur Quitadamo, your career achievements and civic contributions have brought honor to you, your community and your alma mater. The School of Industrial Management is proud to recognize you with the 2004 Albert J. Schwieger Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement.
