1999 Recipients

William A. Julian '49

Bill Julian, you have stepped forward to serve WPI on countless occasions throughout the past fifty years, and you have done so with distinction as a class leader and valued advisor.

With enthusiasm, you have embraced numerous volunteer assignments since your graduation from WPI. The activities in which you've engaged represent an array of association programs and services. Whether chairing your 35th Reunion Committee, serving as an inaugural member of the Investment Committee or chairing the Washington, D.C., Club, you were always a key ingredient to the success of these programs.

As president of the Alumni Association from 1977 to 1979, you provided motivation and leadership during a time of change. You effectively guided the association through an organizational study that led to an expansion of its programs.

Your additional contributions to your alma mater as a solicitor for your 25th and 40th Reunion Gift programs, a member of your 50th Anniversary Steering Committee, and a member of your class board of directors have made WPI and the association stronger. Most remarkably, you were able to accomplish all this while balancing the demands of your family and career.

Bill Julian, it is a distinct pleasure that WPI recognizes your leadership and long-standing commitment to your alma mater by presenting you with the Herbert F. Taylor Alumni Award for Distinguished Service to WPI.

Edward A. Saulnier '59

Ed Saulnier, your enthusiasm and commitment to serve your alma mater have been the hallmarks of your volunteer career at WPI. You have stepped forward willingly, demonstrating a sense of dedication that has won you the admiration of your classmates and WPI.

Throughout your two decades of service, both WPI and the Class of 1959 have benefited from your energy and dedication. In addition to serving on your class board of directors, you have led your class through its last three reunions, adding to the success of the program and fund-raising efforts. As a strong proponent of a class-based fund-raising structure, you have also served as a class agent, participated in phonothons and recently served as a member of the 40th Anniversary Gift Steering Committee. Not only have you shared your time and knowledge with WPI, you have set an example to others and have inspired them to generously support WPI.

Your volunteerism has had an impact on other Alumni Association activities. You have lent your expertise to the Alumni Funds Board. Drawing on your IBM career and the strength of your analytical skills, you were able to bring the unique perspective of data analysis to fund raising at WPI. As Matching Gift Committee chair you led the efforts to leverage corporate matching gifts. As a member of the Executive Committee in the 1980s you served as leadership chair, where you were instrumental in establishing a volunteer training program for the association.

Ed Saulnier, you have steadfastly given of yourself to WPI, sharing your own talents and vision for the betterment of your alma mater. It is with great pride and appreciation that we present you with the Hebert F. Taylor Alumni Award for Distinguished Service to WPI.

Stephen E. Rubin '74

Steve Rubin, you are a true leader, always moving ahead of the crowd while standing firmly behind your alma mater. In your student days, you embraced the newness of the WPI Plan, and thrived within the young Computer Science Department. Since then, you have used that energy, and your pioneering spirit, to advance WPI's mission wherever you go.

As a WPI trustee and a member of the Alumni Association, you have been a staunch ally, working to uphold the quality of WPI's academic programs and its physical facilities. Your spirit of fairness, teamwork and collaboration is appreciated by all who serve beside you.

Through the Venture Forum, you have helped others along the path to success, generously sharing your wisdom and experience. You have used your standing in the corporate world to secure valuable resources--from sponsorships to software--for WPI students and faculty. Above all, you have been a beacon, enlightening the outside world about WPI through your words and through the quality of your own achievements.

The name of your company, Intellution (short for "intelligent solutions"), says much about your approach to business and to life. You have never shied away from a challenge, or hesitated to try a new approach. And because you know firsthand the value of a WPI education, you have staffed your own enterprise with WPI graduates in key executive roles.

Among alumni, you have been a leader in showing what it means to achieve and what it means to contribute. You distinguished yourself early in your career as an entrepreneur and a philanthropist, becoming one of the youngest Presidential Founders in WPI history. By setting a standard of loyalty that your classmates cannot ignore, your leadership challenges others to new heights of generosity and service.

Steve Rubin, you once said you wished to repay WPI for the wonderful opportunities your education has made possible. It is with great joy that we recognize your unique contributions and present you with the Herbert F. Taylor Alumni Award for Distinguished Service to WPI.
