Ichabod Washburn Young Alumni Award for Professional Achievement: 1999 Recipients

David E. Szkutak '79

David Szkutak, president and chief operating officer of U.S. Precision Lens Inc., you have established yourself as a results-oriented manager and leader. Your company, a subsidiary of Corning Inc., is designing and manufacturing plastic and glass lens systems for projection television systems. Its innovative optics are also found in consumer electronics, and are in demand by the semiconductor, medical and automotive industries throughout Asia, Europe and North America.

In 1979, following your graduation from WPI, you began your career in the manufacturing management program of Procter & Gamble. You joined U.S. Precision Lens in 1984 as a manufacturing department manager, the first of an impressive array of positions in the video optics field that include vice president of sales and marketing and executive vice president and chief operating officer. The evolution of your career is a tribute to your commitment to excellence and to your well-defined sense of who you are and where you want to go in life.

Daniel F. Farrar '84

Dan Farrar, in 1998 you were named president and chief executive officer of GE Capital Fleet Services-Europe. Headquartered in Brussels, the division operates in 27 countries and has a fleet of more than 280,000 vehicles under lease and service management. You have demonstrated outstanding abilities to manage, grow and drive change in the fleet business.

Your career began in 1984 when you joined GE's management program. You broadened your management expertise as you pursued an M.B.A. from Harvard University. Then, as managing director for GE Capital Fleet Services Ltd. in the U.K. and as senior vice president of North American Operations in Minnesota, you gained strong leadership skills and broad knowledge and experience within engineering, manufacturing and product marketing. Your broad range of experience has also included the consulting industry.

Dan Farrar, your impressive record of achievement has distinguished you among your peers. It is an honor for WPI to present you with the Ichabod Washburn Young Alumni Award for Professional Achievement.
