Services/Accomodations Available for Students With Disabilities

All Students Must Self-Identify

By law, it is the student's responsibility to identify themselves to the Disability Services Office (DSO and to provide documentation of the disability by a licensed professional. (Please note that learning disabled students' documentation must be less than three years old.) All incoming students have the opportunity to self-identify their disability (physical and/or learning) by filling out the bottom portion of the Voluntary Disclosure Form (60KB PDF file) enclosed in their New Student Orientation Package. Students should send this form, along with the supporting documentation, to the Student Disabilities Service Coordinator. Students with disabilities, who are self-identified after their admission to WPI, must also provide appropriate documentation to the Student Disabilities Service Coordinator, if they wish to receive accommodations.

Learning Disabilities and ADD/ADHD
The Student Disability Services Coordinator will forward the documentation, for students with a learning disability and/or ADD/ADHD, to a consultant who will review the documentation and make recommendations concerning classroom accommodations. After WPI's consultant reviews the documentation, the Student Disability Service Coordinator will then meet with the students to discuss which accommodations and support services are appropriate.
Medical Disabilities
The Student Disability Services Coordinator will meet with those students who have a medical disability to discuss appropriate accommodations and the various campus resources that are available. Additionally, students with physical disabilities are encouraged to contact the Dean of Student Life regarding specific concerns associated with campus life.
Low Vision or Blind
The Student Disability Services Coordinator will meet with those students who have a low vision or are blind to discuss appropriate accommodations and the various campus resources that are available. Additionally, students with visual disabilities are encouraged to contact the Dean of Student Life regarding specific concerns associated with campus life.
Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Through the Disability Services Office (DSO) reasonable accommodations and services are available to assist students who may be deaf or hard of hearing. Assistance may include, but is not necessarily limited to, various means of obtaining notes and the loan or use of some specialized equipment.
Psychiatric Disabilities
The Student Disability Services Coordinator will meet with those students who have psychiatric disabilities to discuss appropriate accommodations and the various campus resources that are available. Additionally, students with psychiatric disabilities are encouraged to contact the Dean of Student Life regarding specific concerns associated with campus life.

Housing Accommodations

Disability Services works closely with the Office of Residential Services to arrange suitable on-campus housing accommodations. These accommodations may, but are not limited to, wheelchair accessible bedrooms, wheelchair accessible bathrooms and single bedrooms. Students requesting housing accommodations must submit a Housing Request Form (12KB PDF file) to the Disability Services Office. This request will be reviewed by both the Director of Disability Services and the Director of Residential Services.
