Entrance and Exit Counseling

Every student that borrows a Federal Stafford Loan is required to complete Entrance and Exit Counseling.  Some other federal and state programs may also require separate loan counseling.  You will be contacted by these loan programs if they require you to complete additional materials for them.

Entrance Counseling

Entrance counseling is an information session for borrowers outlining their rights and responsibilities when borrowing through the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program.  This process must be completed by all first time borrowers at WPI.  This does not mean it's just for freshman, it means any student that is a borrowing a Stafford loan for the first time at WPI needs to complete this requirement even if they've completed it before at another school.

This loan counseling is required by the Federal Department of Education and your loans cannot be disbursed to your account until it has been completed.  Failure to complete Entrance Counseling within the first thirty (30) days of your first enrollment period will result in your loans being canceled.

To begin the Entrance Counseling process please follow the instructions on this form

If you have any questions regarding this process you can email us at finaid@wpi.edu

Exit Counseling

Exit Counseling is an information session for borrowers that are no longer enrolled on an at least half time basis or have completed their degree.  This session is much like the Entrance Counseling but it gets more in depth in topics such as debt management and loan consolidation.  There are also calculators available to estimate your monthly loan payments, estimate a minimum salary for your debt load, and budget worksheets.

To begin the Exit Counseling process please go to this website - National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) for Students

You will then be taken through a series of pages explaining the Stafford Loan process from origination through repayment and all of your rights and responsibilities in the process.  Once you've completed the Exit Counseling you will be asked to provide some demographic information.  You must complete this section and press the submit button at the bottom for our office to be notified that you have completed your Exit Counseling requirement.

If you will not be graduating until after the B term following the year in which you were originally scheduled to graduate you must complete a Not Graduating form.

Once you have completed the Exit Counseling process you can stop by the Office of Financial Aid on the 2nd floor of the Bartlett Center and pick up your loan histories which will give you information about your Stafford and Private Loan borrowing while you were at WPI.  These loan histories can be picked up any time during normal office hours until the end of D term.

If you have any questions regarding this process you can email us at loancounseling@wpi.edu
