Global Projects Aid

Students interested in studying at an off-campus project or exchange site may qualify for additional financial assistance to help cover excess travel and living expenses. Please read below for WPI's policy regarding project centers and financial aid.

Regular Academic Year (A-D Terms)

  1. You must meet the following to be eligible to apply for additional assistance.
    • You must notify the Office of Financial Aid of your plans to participate in the Global Opportunities Program by no later than May 15th prior to the academic year in which you plan to study off-campus. You may do this by either checking the appropriate item on your WPI Upperclass Application or by sending written notification to the Office of Financial Aid.
    • Your financial aid application must be complete and on file by appropriate deadlines.
    • You must be making satisfactory academic progress as defined in the Undergraduate Catalog.
  2. If you have checked off a project center on your WPI Upperclass Application or notified this office before May 15 of your approved participation, the cost of attendance used by the Office of Financial Aid to esablish your financial need will be increased depending on the estimated cost of your project center. Normal award procedures will be applied to this higher cost which reflects a percentage of the additional expenses you will be incurring.
  3. Additional costs beyond the increase in financial aid are the responsibility of the student and family. To cover this cost, families may borrow under one of the auxiliary programs such as the Parent PLUS loan, MEFA or Citiassist Loan. Eligibility for most of these programs requires basic credit checks as a minimum.
  4. If you are going to be away C Term, you will still be responsible for financial aid application deadlines. Renewal applications will be sent to your home address in mid-January. Make sure you or your parents contact the Office of Financial Aid if the financial aid application is not received.

Term E Project Centers

  1. The Office of Financial Aid does not offer traditional campus based grant or loan assistance for Term E. Any financial assistance to cover costs of an off-campus project center must be in the form of a Stafford Loan or one of the auxiliary loans.
  2. You must contact the Office of Financial Aid to obtain an application for summer financial aid, or download an application [PDF] to determine your eligibility.

For more information on financial aid eligibility for E term, please see the Understanding Financial Aid Eligibility section.
