K-12 & Diversity Programs

"A diverse technical workforce is critical to our company's and our nation's future. That's why Intel supports programs that open the doors to engineering, science and math education for women and students of color. Intel is proud to join with WPI in its exemplary programs that both attract and retain such students."
- Mahmoud Bahrami, former Engineering Manager, Intel Massachusetts.

At WPI, the Intel Foundation has generously supported GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) and Strive, weeklong programs for high school girls and underrepresented minorities, respectively, as well as scholarships to help WPI retain undergraduate women and students of color.

Too few girls and students of color stay in the K-12 "pipeline" that leads to technical education and technical careers. For more than a decade, WPI has been committed to helping broaden participation in the fields of science, engineering and math. The university's Diversity Programs, Women's Programs, and K-12 Outreach offices, along with many faculty members, maintain more than 50 programs that target every critical point along the K-16 pipeline, helping ensure that promising students aren't lost along the way.

WPI depends on the financial support of corporate partners to continue these outreach and retention programs, which each year engage more than 3,300 students and more than 600 teachers in grades K through 12. Through these programs, corporate sponsors enhance their image on and off campus. They may also take advantage of numerous employee volunteer opportunities to get to know and hire WPI students.
