Regulations for Alcohol Service in WPI Facilities
WPI's regulations relating to the use of alcoholic beverages for functions on the WPI campus are outlined below.
- Massachusetts General Laws enacted on August 8, 2000 makes it a criminal offense for any person to furnish any alcoholic beverage to a person under 21 years of age, parents or grandparents of the person excepted. The penalties are up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
- Previously, while it was a criminal offense for a person under 21 years of age to possess or consume alcohol, serving alcohol to such a person was not itself a criminal offense, except in the context of a licensed establishment. You should not serve alcoholic beverages to persons under 21 years of age even at private social functions (for example, department parties or at your home). As a result of this change, faculty and staff members would not be defended or indemnified under WPI’s general liability policies if any injury or damage were to result.
- All alcoholic beverages are to be obtained and served by the food service contracted by WPI.
- For off-campus groups, only beer and wine shall be served.
- Alcoholic beverages may be served after 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Alcoholic beverages may be served at functions in the following locations:
Alden Hall, Alumni Gym, Campus Center, Daniels Hall, Ellsworth/Fuller Apartments, Founders Hall, Harrington Auditorium, Higgins House, Institute Hall, Morgan Hall, Sanford Riley Hall, Stoddard Complex and the Wedge.* - All events where alcoholic beverages will be consumed must be coordinated by the Events Office of the University with approval by a member of the President's Cabinet.
- WPI accepts no responsibility through the adoption of these guidelines for the behavior of guests at functions. This responsibility rests solely with the sponsoring individual. WPI, through the Events Office, and the WPI dining services reserve the right to schedule and manage each function in the best interests of both organizations.
*During the academic year, residence hall students are expected to adhere to the Residence Hall Alcohol Policy.
