WPI Department of Corporate and Professional Education One-Day Workshop
In this one-day workshop, you will learn about the negative and positive aspects of conflict. You will examine the consequences of ignoring or maintaining entrenched and conflicting points of view and the positive outcomes of clarifying and resolving differing perspectives.
You will evaluate your own conflict style and expand your repertoire of responses. And, by the end of the session you will have a solid understanding of the necessary steps to most effectively resolve conflict. Through practice and assessment, you will learn how to improve and expand your conflict resolution skills.
Topics
- How to Clarify Differing Perspectives: Learn how to distinguish differing points of view, attitude and values.
- How to Defuse Disruptive Conflict: Cut to the heart of an issue and help participants to clarify their positions
- How to Identify the Barriers to Effective Communications: Create an environment where people can listen to each other, understand their differences and move to common acceptance.
- How to Select the Most Appropriate Response in a Difficult Situation: Weigh your options and determine the best response given your position and level of involvement.
- How to Mediate Conflicting Positions and Arrive at Good Team Decisions: Learn the steps for effective conflict resolution and how to be a successful mediator of team disputes.

About the Workshop Instructor
Sandy Nickel is the President of Nashoba Associates, Inc. She has worked with a wide array of organizations in industries such as manufacturing, services, high technology, education, financial services, mass media and telecommunications.
Sandy has over 20 years consulting experience in the areas of communication, teambuilding, leadership, and experiential learning. Currently, her work is focusing on helping organizations in such areas as team development, facilitation and coaching skills, leadership skill development, change management, supervisory training, and executive coaching.
Sandy has a doctorate in Speech Communication and has been on the faculty and/or an administrator at the University of Iowa, the University of Missouri, Sloan School of Management at MIT, and Boston University. In addition to her consulting and training work in the business sector, she also offers workshops for Boston University, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the University of Connecticut, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
