Goddard GigaPop

What is the Goddard GigaPoP?

Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Goddard GigaPoP, located in NEESCom's Worcester Exchange Facility is one of only two major Internet2 access nodes in New England. The Robert H. Goddard GigaPoP offers Internet2 connectivity to eligible participants in Worcester and New England.

The gigaPoP has an OC-3 (155 Mbit/s) connection to the Qwest Abilene backbone of the Internet2 network, and can readily scale the connection to the OC-48 (2488 Mbit/s) level. Located at 474 Main Street, Worcester, the gigaPoP is co-located with a host of voice and data network carriers, which offer attractive ancillary connection options and benefits to Internet2 participants.

Who can join?

Internet2 is a project operated by UCAID, the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development. Universities and colleges can become regular members of the Internet2. Corporations that contribute to Internet2 can become corporate members, sponsors, or partners, depending upon their level of commitment to the project. Institutions such as community colleges, libraries, museums, and K-12 groups may join as sponsored participants.

Why did WPI select the name, Goddard GigaPoP?

Robert H. Goddard, the father of modern rocketry, was a Worcester native and was a member of the class of 1908 at WPI. His relationship to Worcester, WPI, and his leadership in technology led us to think of his name for this hub in the Internet2 advanced networking experiment. For more information about Dr. Goddard, visit the WPI Archives Web site.

Foundations of the Goddard GigaPoP

The Goddard gigaPoP was made possible by supporting grant 9975857 from the National Science Foundation.
