Intermittent Telephone Service on Thursday, 5/9/13 from 5:30 to 10:00 PM EST

Why? Due to necessary maintenance, power to parts of the telephone system must be shut off.
Groups Affected Anyone attempting to use a WPI telephone on any WPI campus (including emergency phones).
Impact * No outgoing calls can be made during the maintenance on parts of the system
* No incoming calls can be received during the maintenance on parts of the system

Details
As part of an on-going maintenance upgrade IT staff need to change the way the WPI PBX (Private Branch Exchange which runs WPI's telephone network) is powered. In order to move to the new power source, the PBX must be powered down. We will make every attempt to move one piece at a time to keep as many phones operational as possible, however, at one time or another throughout the maintenance window between 5:30 PM and 10:00 PM EST on Thursday, May 09, 2013, each phone will be inoperative. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Details
On Wednesday, January 2, 2013 the Telecommunications Office will apply some patches to the telephone system for necessary updates and maintenance between the hours of 6:00pm and 10:00pm. People may experience a temporary call blockage (a fast busy signal) when making outgoing calls or a loss of dial tone during the service window. Incoming calls may not be received during intermittent outages.

Why? The connection between the campus phone automated attendant and the telephone switch will be changed.
Groups Affected Individuals calling 508-831-5000 from off-campus, or ext. 5000 from on-campus.
Impact The automated phone attendant will be unavailable for incoming calls to 508-831-5000 (off-campus) or ext. 5000 (on-campus). Directly dialed incoming numbers and all out-going calls will be unaffected.

Voicemail Outage (Call Pilot) Wednesday, 9/28 5:00-6:00 pm (EDT)

Why? The Call Pilot voice mail system will be taken offline in order to make a required repair.

Impact During the outage:
There will be no login access to the voicemail system.
No new messages will be received or recorded.

In order to make a required repair, the Call Pilot voicemail system will be shut down starting at 5:00 pm (EDT) tomorrow evening. The system should be down for about an hour.

Between approximately 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm, there will be no access to the voicemail system and no new messages will be received or recorded.

After successful completion of the repair, the system will return to its normal state with all prior greetings and messages intact.

Phone System Unavailable starting at 6:00 PM (EDT) on 08/11/2011

How long? Approximately 1 hour
Why? A required upgrade to the campus phone system requires that it be taken offline for a period of time. During the first hour, no campus phones will have service. Certain locations will experience additional disruption of service from 7-9 pm.
Groups Affected Faculty, Staff, and Students, off-campus callers
Impact Between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm
All campus phone services will be unavailable.
During this time:
No outgoing calls can be made
No incoming calls from off-campus callers can be received
No internal calling (extension to extension) can be made
No voice mail will be received and there will be no access to the voice mail system
No emergency call boxes will work.
  • In the event of an emergency, use your personal cell phone to call campus police at: 508.754.1889
  • OR dial 911
Between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm
Additional phones service disruptions lasting about 30 minutes are expected at the following locations: Gateway Park and 85 Prescott Street
During this time, no outgoing calls can be made from phones at these locations nor will any incoming calls be received.
People in these locations are asked to plan accordingly and make other arrangements for phone service (such as a personal cell phone).
Voice mail will be received during this time and can be checked once service is restored.

Thursday, August 11, 2011, beginning at 6:00 PM (EDT) and lasting about 1 hour, the campus phone system will be upgraded. During this time, no campus phone services will function. The WPI PBX (Private Branch Exchange) will be upgraded to enable enhanced functionality which will position WPI for future service offerings.

Emergency Call Boxes
WPI Community members should be advised that during this phone service outage, no campus emergency call boxes will work.

Details
Due to a hardware failure on aging equipment, WPI IT has migrated the campus voice recognition call routing service to a new system based on our Microsoft Exchange e-mail infrastructure. As of 5:00 PM (EST) on Friday January 14, 2011, internal calls directed to the operator and external calls directed to (508) 831-5000 will be answered by this system.

As a result, the following changes have been made:
Personal call routing data is now based on directory information loaded from Banner into the Exchange Global Address List. If you find this information to be incorrect, please update your contact information using Banner Self Service at http://bannerweb.wpi.edu.
Personally recorded names have been lost, and this functionality is currently unavailable.
Previously requested name aliases are currently unavailable. WPI IT is working to restore this information as soon as possible.
Extension 6000 will no longer be available to reach the voice directory. Dial zero to reach the voice directory system.

Telephone Service Disruption

Why? Replacement of underground copper phone cable
Groups Affected Olin Hall, Goddard Hall, and Higgins House
Impact Telephone service to these buildings will be unavailable. This includes fax machines and modems

Details
WPI Network Operations will be replacing the underground copper telehone cable runs to Olin Hall, Goddard Hall and Higgins House due to water damage. This replacement is strictly for external building-to-building cabling and no internal office wiring will need to be worked on. From August 2 at 5:00 PM until August 4 at 5:00 PM telephones in these locations will not be available.

Details
As you know, we successfully migrated the phone system to new CPU cabinets over the weekend. The final step in the upgrade process is to physically remove the old cabinets and move the new equipment into place. The new configuration has different power and cabling requirements, and the system must be powered down in order to complete the rewiring.


Telephone System Upgrade

Why? We are upgrading the CPU, core cabinet and software components of our telephone system.

Details
The entire campus will experience SPORADIC outages in phone service for about 6 hours as the new equipment replaces the old and is physically connected to the many loops (or segments) of the completed system. These outages should be of no more than 30 minutes in duration for each group of phones that will be affected. Voicemail will also be impacted for about 30 minutes sometime during this period.
