Reading & Math Stars
Reading & Math Stars is a fun and innovative K-4 program comprised of short activities based on a diverse set of historical characters with simple language and hands-on mathematics activities that your students will enjoy.*
Integrating Math with Language Arts
The Reading & Math Stars program is composed of eight curricular units meant to serve as a supplement to an instructor’s current K-4 curriculum.
These units focus on the inspirational achievements and interests of a diverse set of historical figures. Each unit includes a biography and accompanying Language Arts and Mathematics activities that can be inserted into a standard K-4 curriculum at the instructor’s discretion. Language Arts activities have been developed to follow the five Reading First key concepts:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics Instruction
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Text Comprehension
The mathematics activities in Reading & Math Stars mirror the standards set by the National Council of Mathematics Teachers, focusing on:
- Data Analysis & Statistics
- Patterns & Functions
- Geometry
- Measurement
A Diverse Set of Characters
The Reading & Math Stars are made up of a diverse selection of historical & contemporary leaders and innovators:
- Antonia Novello, Doctor
- Benjamin Franklin, Inventor
- Booker T Washington, Teacher
- Zaha Hadid, Architect
- Sequoya, Educator
- Lillian Gilbreath, Engineer
- George Washington Carver, Scientist
- Ellen Ochoa, Astronaut
The characters are depicted as children, empowering students to recognize the potential for achievement in themselves.
