Reading and Math Stars Pilot Program Informational Meetings
Dates: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 or Thursday, October 2, 2008 4:00-5:30 PM
Audience: K-4 Educators
WPI is looking for a team of dedicated K-4 faculty to pilot the Reading and Math Stars program during the 2008-2009 school year. As a participating educator, you would be making a commitment to deliver several of the curriculum lessons in your classroom this year and provide evaluation feedback. In addition, you would be required to attend in 2-3 team meetings at WPI throughout the school year. For your participation you will be awarded professional development points as well as a stipend for hours spend working on the program outside of school. Each participating teacher will receive a complimentary copy of the final version of the curriculum units after they are published. Please note that in order to obtain accurate assessment data, teachers who have previously participated in the Reading and Math Stars program will not be eligible for this pilot.
Premier Award for K-12 Engineering Curriculum
Submission Deadline: October 15, 2008
Audience: K-16 Educators (Submitted curricula must be K-12 level)

Summer Workshop/Class - Physics of Work and Energy
Dates: July 9th - 17th, 2008
Department: Physics & K-12 Outreach
Audience: Grade 5-9 Teachers
Are you a teacher who wants to become more proficient in physical science and technology/engineering applications as they relate to your classroom and align to the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework? This workshop will address the concepts that underlie student misconceptions in the Physics of Work and Energy which will include the areas of:
- Kinetic, Potential, and Thermal Energy
- Transfer of energy from one form to another
- Processes in which work is done
- Grade level appropriate engineering examples
The workshop can be taken for PDPs or graduate credit.

Project Lead the Way Summer Training Institute

Summer Workshop/Class - Assessing and Addressing Misconceptions in Physical Science
Dates: July 28th - August 1st, 2008
Audience: Teachers in grades 3 - 8
The Central Massachusetts STEM Pipeline Network is offering a five-day workshop on physical science, focusing in the following areas:
- Deepening and strengthening teacher content knowledge on specific physical science concepts (energy and energy transfer, electricity, density and conservation of mass) underlying science misconceptions
- Raising awareness of the pervasiveness and strength of physical science misconception
- Using and interpreting formative assessments for understanding students' reasoning for what they know and what they don't
- Learning and practicing instructional strategies and activities to help students interpret and develop understanding of physical science concepts

On-Going Opportunities for Educators

We are looking for math teachers who would like to try the Assistments program at their schools. Currently there are three towns which have 20+ math teachers using the Assistments as part of their regular math class every two weeks.

Audience: math, science, and technology teachers
We are looking for math, science, and technology teachers to participate in the testing and refinement of new lessons and activities that have been developed for the TeachEngineering resource website. Participating teachers will receive a stipend for their time.

Working with WPI Student Teams
Audience: Primary/Secondary Educational Institutions
A WPI undergraduate education is very project-focused. Many of our students are interested in applying their project skills and knowledge to working with schools.
