Mission
Worcester Polytechnic Institute has always valued education rooted in mathematics, science, and engineering. These areas are the fundamental core of WPI students' strengths when they enter our institution. As part of our mission, we realize that it is critical for WPI to provide a strongly supportive role in enabling students and educators learn relevant, standards-based content in these areas.
WPI acknowledges that the mathematics, science, and engineering backgrounds of K-12 students are not as strong as they could be. This weakness directly affects future college students and thus the national and regional economies. As an active member of our community and the central Massachusetts region, WPI is committed to optimizing our positive impact and influence on the welfare of the students and cultivating the economic growth of the region. To this end, we fully support a wide variety of programs in the areas of technological literacy and in science and mathematics learning and teaching. Through our extensive involvement in over forty outreach programs, we are making rapid progress toward our goal in motivating and committing both students and educators to higher levels of technological literacy.
Our primary objectives include:
- Increasing the technological literacy of all K-12 students and their participation in the fields of engineering, mathematics, and science
- Increasing involvement in engineering and science from members of under-represented groups such as women and minority populations
- Increasing the number of qualified mathematics, technology, engineering and science teachers
- Improving the mathematics, technology, engineering and science educational offerings available in public and private schools
