Becoming a Registered PLTW Teacher
In order to attend training to teach a PLTW course, you must first register with the PLTW Network. Make sure that your district has signed a PLTW agreement and your school has registered with PLTW before you register.
Attending Summer Training Institutes
Through attending a 2-week summer course you will earn certification to teach the course in which you participated. The Summer Training Institute Courses (STIs) are hosted each year by WPI and the other PLTW Affiliate Institutions. This intensive training is co-taught by an experienced PLTW teacher (master teacher) and a university faculty member and provides you with the following:
- Exposure to the curriculum & other PLTW teaching resources
- Practice learning the course-specific software
- Opportunity to network with other PLTW teachers
- Option to earn graduate credit for your STI coursework
Pre-Registration & Registration for the Summer Training Institutes
To attend a course at the WPI STI, you must complete the following process:
- Become a "Registered Teacher" with the PLTW National network.
- Login to the Registered Teacher page of PLTW and select the course you wish to attend.
- Choose WPI as your site.*
- In-State and Out-of-State Training
*If you are a teacher from Massachusetts and WPI is offering your course, WPI will appear as your only option for a site. If you have a conflict with attending our session, you must contact us directly (mcyr@wpi.edu).
*If you are an out-of-state teacher who cannot attend in your state and want to attend our session, contact your state’s Affiliate University Director
- Submit your information for the pre-registration for the WPI site. After submitting your information for pre-registration, STI attendees will receive further instruction from the WPI PLTW staff regarding billing and the completion of housing, meal plan & emergency information. If you have any questions please contact the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Project Lead the Way Office:
Information on the upcoming STI can be found on the Summer Training page.
Becoming a Master Teacher
If you teach at a Certified PLTW school, have attended training for a PLTW course and taught that course for at least one year, you are eligible to become a Master Teacher!
As a master teacher, you co-deliver the STI courses with another master teacher or a faculty member at one of the affiliate universities. Look for an email from PLTW each fall requesting applications for this opportunity.
Guidance Counselor Training
Guidance Counselors are instrumental in promoting to and targeting students who might be interested in taking PLTW courses. For this reason, annual Counselor Conferences are held in New England to provide counselors with a comprehensive understanding of the Project Lead The Way curriculum. For a PLTW school, a representative from the guidance department should attend a Counselor Conference a minimum of once every 3 years. Conferences for the New England Region are typically held in January - please check the Guidance Counselor Conference page for posting of dates & times of upcoming conferences.
