WPI's Support of K-12 Outreach
WPI supports our robust K-12 outreach in many ways:
- WPI requires all undergraduates to complete a nine-credit-hour Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) relating science and/or technology to societal issues and values. Undergraduates can design this project around a variety of topics aimed at improving learning in K-12 math and science. WPI students may also use this project as their pre-practicum and practicum in WPI's state-recognized teacher preparation program for initial licensure in middle and high school math, biology, chemistry and physics.
- WPI not only has close working relations with the Worcester Public Schools, but also sponsors the only partnership in the country where a private technological university operates a free high school on its campus for advanced 11th and 12th grade study of math, science, and the humanities -- the Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Science.
- Perhaps most important, WPI recognizes and responds to both institutional and national needs to identify and help pre-college students succeed in demanding and rewarding majors in engineering, science, computer science and mathematics. To reach that goal, WPI supports a full-time Office of K-12 Outreach, which is engaged in numerous projects to improve teaching and learning in math, engineering and science, for both students and teachers.
