Academic & Industry Partnerships
The work at WPI’s Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center (LSBC) is a nexus of partnerships and collaborations with academia and industry.
Our faculty and students routinely collaborate with colleagues at institutions in Massachusetts and across the country, including an innovative program developed by WPI and the nearby University of Massachusetts Medical School to sponsor translational research projects that leverage the strengths of both institutions. WPI and UMass Medical School also offer a joint graduate program in biomedical engineering and medical physics.
In addition to academic labs and offices, the LSBC is home to the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives, one of the country’s leading incubators for life sciences companies. MBI has launched dozens of companies in Central Massachusetts and continues its mission today by helping entrepreneurs commercialize promising technologies, including some spun-off from WPI labs.
Blue Sky Biotech, one of the fastest growing contract research organizations in the region, is located at the LSBC. As is RXi Pharmaceuticals, the company co-founded by UMass Medical School Professor and Nobel Laureate Craig Mello to develop novel therapeutics based on his breakthrough RNAi research. Staff at both companies interacts daily with WPI faculty and students on formalized joint research efforts and at the informal gatherings and discussions that exemplify the vibrant intellectual community at the LSBC.
WPI researchers are engaged in numerous sponsored research programs funded by industry. And through WPI’s Corporate and Professional Education programs we work with many leading life sciences companies to help their employees enhance and extend the skills they need to keep pace with innovation and tackle the emerging challenges in the life sciences sector.
As the Price Waterhouse Coopers report on the Massachusetts Life Sciences Super Cluster documents, Worcester is an anchor of one of the largest and most innovative concentrations of life sciences companies and institutions in the world. WPI is proud to be an emerging leader in that cluster, working closely with partners and colleagues on many initiatives.Maintained by firstname.lastname@example.org
