Citing PubMed Central (PMC) ID Numbers
When your manuscript is submitted to NIH, you will receive an NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system ID number. Once it is available in PubMed Central (PMC), it will be assigned a PMC ID number.
The effective date for including PMC ID or NIHMS ID numbers for any articles cited in your progress reports, new applications, and renewals was May 25, 2008. These ID numbers are only needed for articles accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008, but you may include PMC ID numbers for articles already in PubMed Central as well.
You can search PubMed Central for the citations and the PMC ID numbers will be listed. Researchers should note that this number is not the same as the "PMID" number found in regular PubMed database. The PMC ID number is a number that is unique to PubMed Central and not the regular database. Reference staff at the Gordon Library will provide assistance with locating the appropriate reference numbers. Please see http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Library/Help/ for options on how to contact the library.
