Prohibited Parking

The following parking/traffic regulations delineates the towing of vehicles parked or standing, in such manner or in such areas as are further described, or in any way under the control of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

  1. Overnight Parking:
    Parking from 2:00am - 6:00am is prohibited in the following areas - West Street /south end quad hill area, West Street lot, Library lot, Quad lot, Goddard lot, Higgins House lot, and/or any service road, fire lane or access road area. Resident students may park their properly registered vehicles in their assigned lots. Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow. Extenuating circumstances that dictates any vehicle to be left overnight must be approved through the WPI Police Department.
  2. Emergency Access Lanes:
    Solid yellow lines along the curbing mark our emergency access lanes. They appear in all the parking lots, but are more prominent on our service roads. No parking is allowed in these solid yellow lined areas as they serve as fire lanes and emergency vehicle access lanes. Areas directly in front of most buildings are also considered fire lanes. Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow.
  3. Loading Zones:
    Solid yellow lines with cross-striping mark the loading zone areas on campus. Dumpster locations, loading docks, and areas along side of handicap spaces are considered loading zones. Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow.
  4. Service Vehicle Only:
    Signage identifies these spaces. Service vehicle parking spaces are located on our service roads and in most of our parking lots. Parking is prohibited in these areas as these spaces are reserved for WPI vehicles which are required to respond to both service and emergency related calls in various locations on campus. (Campus Police, grounds crew, locksmith, mail run, etc.)
  5. Reserved Spaces:
    Signage identifies these spaces. These spaces include Car pool parking, United Way recipients, President and Provost parking etc... Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow.
  6. Handicapped Parking:
    Signage/cross striping/symbol identification mark these areas. Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow.
  7. Beech Tree Circle:
    Signage identifies this restricted area. Parking is prohibited in this area. Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow.
  8. John Wing Road:
    This roadway leads to the Higgins House it is considered an emergency access road. No parking is allowed along the roadway. There is limited parking around the circle of Higgins House. No parking is allowed by the handicap walkway. Strictly Enforced - Subject To Immediate Tow.
  9. Any Vehicle that has received five or more parking violations is subject to being towed, as are those vehicles that are found to be parked in areas designated as Tow Zones:
    • Vehicles parked upon any sidewalk - or upon any crosswalk
    • Within (10) feet of a fire hydrant
    • Blocking a driveway
    • Obstructing an exit or entrance
    • In front of/or the moving of, a barricade temporarily or permanently erected
    • On land not designed for vehicular traffic such as walks, lawns and open fields
    • In front of a gateway, entrance or other open area
    These are considered Strictly Enforced Tow Zones.
