Second Degree Sunburns: The Book of Liz and Love and Money Wednesday, 7/15/2009 - Saturday, 7/18/2009, 8:00 PM-10:00 PM
Sunburns in the summer theatre group at WPI, and this year its a double feature of two one act shows, The Book of Liz by Amy and David Sedaris, and Love and Money by Dennis Kelly. Directed by James Johnson and Steven Vessella, and Produced by Tristan Spoor, all students at WPI. The Little Theatre (opened in November 2005) seats 99, with air conditioning (a plus in July!)
The Book of Liz is a comedy that follows Sister Elisabeth Donderstock of the Cluster Haven Squeamish (an Amish-like Community). The Squeamish run a cheeseball making operation and Liz created their secret recipe, but when new-in-town Brother Brightbee demoted Liz to mearly collecting chives, she runs away to work in a restaurant, thanks to a kind Ukranian couple she meets. While Liz is living it up, the cheeseballs are suffering. Is Liz the secret ingredient?
Love and Money is a fairly new British drama. David, a widower is in the midst of an online romance with Sandrine, begins discussing his deceased wife Jess. David and Jess were a young London couple spiraling into debt. Sandrine is very interested until some disturbing information about Jess's death is revealed, and the email relationship abruptly ends. We meet her parents and another cast of colorful characters that describe Jess's shopping addiction and the great lengths her husband went to trying to pay off her debts.
A mix of comedy and drama, these shows are for mature audiences, but a great night out for some affordable theatre on a hot summer's night!
