The CSWS Program is a great opportunity for those students looking to have their full work study allocation go toward volunteer work. The following positions are available on and off campus for students with work study to earn money while volunteering in the community for the academic year.

ON CAMPUS
Community Service Specialist (10 students needed)
[7-10 hours per week (negotiable)]
Service Specialists will be responsible for staffing the Community Service Center located on the third floor of the Campus Center. This person will serve as the primary contact for 1-2 community agencies. The ideal candidate will contact the service agency to plan regular (at least monthly) service activities for WPI students at the agency. The student will be responsible for planning the event, signing up interested students, and publicizing the opportunity through the design and distribution of PR materials, scheduling the Community Service Van (if needed) and serving as the on-site coordinator for the event. Other duties include assisting students who come to the service center and answering telephone inquiries. The ideal candidate will have a passion for helping others and seek to learn event coordination skills.
Community Service Public Relations Specialist
[7-10 hours per week (negotiable)]
The Community Service Public Relations Specialist will be responsible for coordinating all publicity for the Community Service Center. This person will produce a weekly e-newsletter that will be sent to various individuals regarding upcoming service opportunities. This person will also help design posters and flyers listing upcoming opportunities. The ideal candidate will be able to use Adobe design software (such as Illustrator, InDesign, and/or Photoshop) and will have excellent written communication skills.
Community Service Van Specialist
[5-8 hours per week (negotiable)]
This person will also be a Community Service Van Driver (see Community Service Van Driver job description) and will also help to coordinate the other van drivers and schedule the Community Service Van for trips. The ideal candidate will be organized, work well with a variety of people, possess a good driving record, a Massachusetts Drivers License, and be willing to participate in a defensive driving course.
Community Service Van Driver (4 students needed)

Community Service Van Drivers will be responsible for transporting students to and from service sites in Worcester and surrounding communities. Drivers will be compensated for a minimum of 4 hours of driving time, even if the driver only drives for 30 minutes for a drop off and pick up. The ideal candidate will have a good driving record, a Massachusetts Drivers License, and be willing to participate in a defensive driving course.

Child Care Assistant, First Friends Day Care Center, 111 Park Avenue

Activities include: helping with snacks, arts and crafts, reading with children, and playing games. An on-site orientation and training are provided. Work hours are during weekdays only. No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate will have reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours. Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must.
Tutor, Elm Park Elementary School, 23 N. Ashland Street

Activities include tutoring grade-school students in math and science. Students may either work during school hours in a classroom or in the after-school program. An orientation and training are provided. Work hours are during weekdays only. No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate has reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours. Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must.
Office Assistant, Elm Park Elementary School, 23 N. Ashland Street
[Hours per week: 5-10]
Activities include answering phones, answering the door, arranging student pick-up and using the computer to categorize. Additional duties may include: assisting with intramural sports, working in the school library, and providing additional clerical support. An orientation and training are provided. Work hours are during weekdays only. No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate will have reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours, as well as, occasional paid meetings—conflicts with classes will be avoided. Library Assistant, Elm Park Elementary School, 23 N. Ashland Street

Activities include shelving books and monitoring use of the facility. Additional duties may include: assisting with intramural sports, tutoring grade-school students in math and science, and providing clerical support. An orientation and training are provided. Work hours are during weekdays only. No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate will have reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours, as well as, occasional paid meetings—conflicts with classes will be avoided. Education Department Assistant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street
[Hours per week: 5-10]
Projects include: receptionist duties (preferably available Tuesday-Friday from 2-5) and/or perform design work to make flyers to publicize classes and/or work with class/student data and analyze it so that it is more useful. An orientation and training are provided. Students should have a strong attention to detail. They must have basic computer skills with Windows, be familiar with searching the Internet, and have a basic knowledge of on-line databases. Creativity for working on flyers and publications is a plus. Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers is essential. Reliable attendance is a must. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work-week, but are expected to stick to those hours.
Library Assistant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street
[Hours per week: 5-10]
Projects include: editing work on the computer database, working at the reference desk, creating library databases using Access, and filing slides and shelving books. An orientation and training are provided. Students should have a strong attention to detail. They must have basic computer skills with Windows, be familiar with searching the Internet, and have a basic knowledge of on-line databases. Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers is essential. Reliable attendance is a must. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work-week, but are expected to stick to those hours as well as occasional paid meetings—conflicts with classes will be avoided.
Marketing Assistant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street
[Hours per week: 5-10]
Students are involved in carried projects for this division. They provide services such as labeling and stuffing envelopes for the WAM distribution program, searching newspapers for related stories, preparing them for archiving, listing them in the Public Relations database, and answering phones. An orientation and training are provided.
Visitor Services Desk Attendant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street
[Hours per week: 5-10]
Visitor Service Desk employees are specially trained to represent the Museum by giving information, responding to questions, and special needs, and selling museum memberships. Students must enjoy working with the public and be enthusiastic about the Museum’s programs. Students should be familiar with the usage of IPod shuffles and IPod Minis. They should have a desire and willingness to learn about the Museum and its collections. An EXTENSIVE on-site training is available. There will be some night and weekend responsibilities.
WPI Mentor, Exploradreams/Robokids
[Hours per week: 2-4]
Activities include tutoring and mentoring grade-school students in math and science and assisting them in recreational activities. An orientation and training are provided. Work hours are during weekdays only. The weekly Exploradreams program is usually held on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm. Requirements include the ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must. Good communication skills and a willingness to share your knowledge in math and science are essential.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts
[Hours per week: 1-2]
Activities include a one on one mentoring program for children in the local area. WPI Students would volunteer at three local schools that are within walking distance to WPI. Hours areMonday-Friday 2-4pm.
Relay for Life Committee, American Cancer Society
Members of the committee will be responsible for planning the 2008 Relay for Life on campus Volunteers will serve on the planning committee from September through April as well as staff the event held in April.
Classroom Mentor, Junior Achievement, Area Elementary Schools
Trained volunteers visit the classroom weekly for 5 consecutive weeks for one period each week. The volunteer delivers the materials and leads activities working closely with the teacher. They serve as excellent role models. Each Junior Achievement Class is a total of 5 hours plus training. Hours are flexible Monday-Fridays during school hours. Training is provided.

Activities include tutoring grade-school students in math and science. Students may either work during school hours in a classroom or in the after-school program. Store Clerk, Saint Vincent de Paul, 507 Park Avenue

Activities include dealing with customers, sorting and preparing merchandise, some data entry, helping to arrange and carryout clothing drives, and working with staff to organize seasonal storage system. Hours are flexible between 9am-4pm Monday through Saturday.

Serve as a member of the Counseling team, responsible for providing support and advocacy to survivors of sexual assault and their significant others at hospitals and police stations. Extensive training is provided that includes sexual assault orientation and sexual assault crisis counselor certification. A six month commitment is required.

A home for families of children being treated at UMass. Activities include yard work, helping at family events, fundraisers, office work and playing with children staying at the house. Hours are Monday through Friday with some weekend events.
Disaster Action Team Member, American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts, 2000 Century Drive
Responsible for providing disaster relief services to survivors of disaster. DAT members are on call and choose their response days and are trained through local courses at the Red Cross.

Activities include staffing distribution desk, data entry, stocking and organizing shelves, breaking down boxes, preparing bags of groceries and infant supplies as well as making client referrals and following up on those referrals. Hours are Monday-Thursday 1-4pm or Tuesday 4-6:30pm

Students will serve as tutors to area children. The purpose of the activity will be to help children understand the importance of education and good grades. Tutors will provide a brief period of game time and tutor students in basic skills such as math, reading, science, etc. Easily accessible from campus by WRTA bus.
