Office Assistant, Habitat for Humanity MetroWest/Greater Worcester, 111 Park Avenue
[Hours per week: Up to 10 hours/week]
Activities include database management, website updates, grants research, and general office support. Database and basic website training will be provided, although existing web skills are a plus. Students can work with the office to schedule their own hours within a normal work week, although a regular schedule and reliable attendance are required. Tutor, Elm Park Elementary School, 23 N. Ashland Street

Activities include tutoring grade-school students in math and science.  Students may either work during school hours in a classroom or in the after-school program. An orientation and training are provided.  Work hours are during weekdays only.  No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate has reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours.  Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must. 

Office Assistant, Elm Park Elementary School, 23 N. Ashland Street

Activities include answering phones, answering the door, arranging student pick-up and using the computer to categorize.  Additional duties may include: assisting with intramural sports, working in the school library, and providing additional clerical support.  An orientation and training are provided.  Work hours are during weekdays only.  No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate will have reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours, as well as, occasional paid meetings—conflicts with classes will be avoided.  Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must.

Fundraising Assistant, Elm Park Elementary School, 23 N. Ashland Street

Activities include helping to plan a fundraiser to support the school.  Work hours are during weekdays only.  No nights or weekends. The ideal candidate will have reliable attendance. Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work week, but are expected to stick to those hours, as well as, occasional paid meetings—conflicts with classes will be avoided.  Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must.

Education Department Assistant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street

Projects include: receptionist duties (preferably available Tuesday-Friday from 2-5) and/or perform design work to make flyers to publicize classes and/or work with class/student data and analyze it so that it is more useful.  An orientation and training are provided. Students should have a strong attention to detail.  They must have basic computer skills with Windows, be familiar with searching the Internet, and have a basic knowledge of on-line databases.  Creativity for working on flyers and publications is a plus.  Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers is essential.  Reliable attendance is a must.  Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work-week, but are expected to stick to those hours. 

Library Assistant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street

Projects include: editing work on the computer database, working at the reference desk, creating library databases using Access, and filing slides and shelving books.  An orientation and training are provided. Students should have a strong attention to detail.  They must have basic computer skills with Windows, be familiar with searching the Internet, and have a basic knowledge of on-line databases.  Ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers is essential.  Reliable attendance is a must.  Workers each schedule their own hours within a normal work-week, but are expected to stick to those hours as well as occasional paid meetings—conflicts with classes will be avoided.

Marketing Assistant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street

Students are involved in carried projects for this division.  They provide services such as labeling and stuffing envelopes for the WAM distribution program, searching newspapers for related stories, preparing them for archiving, listing them in the Public Relations database, and answering phones.  An orientation and training are provided.

Visitor Services Desk Attendant, Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street
[Hours per week: 5-10]
Visitor Service Desk employees are specially trained to represent the Museum by giving information, responding to questions, and special needs, and selling museum memberships. Students must enjoy working with the public and be enthusiastic about the Museum's programs. Students should be familiar with the usage of IPod shuffles and IPod Minis. They should have a desire and willingness to learn about the Museum and its collections. An EXTENSIVE on-site training is available. There will be some night and weekend responsibilities.

WPI Mentor, Exploradreams / Robokids
[Hours per week: 2-4]
Activities include tutoring and mentoring grade-school students in math and science and assisting them in recreational activities.  An orientation and training are provided. Work hours are during weekdays only.  The weekly Exploradreams program is usually held on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm. Requirements include the ability to work with and follow directions from staff and/or peers and a desire to work with children is a must. Good communication skills and a willingness to share your knowledge in math and science are essential.  

"Big", Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts
[Hours per week: 1-2]
Activities include a one on one mentoring program for children in the local area. WPI Students would volunteer at three local schools that are within walking distance to WPI. Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.

Relay for Life Committee, American Cancer Society
Members of the committee will be responsible for planning the 2009 Relay for Life on campus. Volunteers will serve on the planning committee from September through April as well as staff the event held in April.

Site Coordinator, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts
[Hours per week: 1-2]
Assist a BBBS Match Specialist in interviewing and assessing children, coordinating volunteer schedules and transportation, supervising matches and recruiting WPI volunteers. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 2:30-4:30pm at Belmont Street School.

Website Intern, Friends of Institute Park, Inc.
[Hours per week: Up to 10 hours/week]
Seeks a tech savvy, organized and creative person to assist it with its website, www.institutepark.org. The website is currently maintained by an outside agency, and the assistance needed is to work with that agency to make the website as attractive and inviting as possible to the website's visitors. Expertise in website design and maintenance is preferred. The goal of the website is to be the single best resource and repository for all things that relate to Worcester's Institute Park. This would include listings of current events and activities taking place at the Park; providing a comprehensive history of the park; helping with research from such institutions as the Worcester Historical Museum and the American Antiquarian Society, particularly in downloading historical pictures of the Park as well as narratives that explain the Park's founding and historical connections to WPI and Worcester; assisting in gathering and displaying on the website personal narratives from area residents reflecting personal and individual experiences in the Park; as well as creating various interactive aspects of the website such as questionnaires and suggestions for bettering the Park.  As future construction takes place in the Park pursuant to the Park's Master Plan for improvements, maintenance of an archive of the construction posted to the website would also be part of this project.  Interested parties are encouraged to contact Friends of Institute Park at P.O. Volunteer, Girls Incorporated, 125 Providence Street

Girls, Inc. offers facility-based, after-school programs that provide youth with constructive skill building alternatives to prevent destructive behaviors. Work with girls on crafts, play games with them, and act as a positive role model.  These programs are offered Monday-Friday, after school, and on Saturdays.

Volunteers are needed for literacy component of afterschool program. Chess Instructor, JCC Afterschool Program, 633 Salisbury Street

Volunteers with interest and skill in the game of chess are needed to oversee chess club for school age children. Volunteers will teach and supervise children interested in learning this fun and intellectually challenging game. The web development team is in the process of constructing Phase 2 of YouthJobNet.org, (YJN) "the next generation workforce", a web-based resource that is being created by youth to link individuals with jobs and resources. This position will assist participants in the management of the YJN web site and be responsible for any of the following: web server hardware and software is running properly, creating and designing the web site, creating and updating web pages, replying to user feedback, creating CGI scripts, and monitoring traffic through the site.

Home Work Center Tutor, Worcester Housing Authority, 40 Belmont Street

WHA Home Work Center tutors provide supervision and assistance in an after-school "drop-in" program for children of Great Brook Valley/ Curtis Apartments and Lakeside Apartments.  The Center can accommodate up to 30 children per day. Mentor, Worcester Youth Center

The Worcester Youth Center is interested in having college students in the Worcester community become involved through avenues such as volunteerism, community service, internships, and work study. Opportunities include academic support, basketball coaches, assisting with culinary arts, and mentoring.
