Class News - Winter 2003
We weren't able to fit all of the news submissions in the newsletter. So here is everything we received, arranged chronologically by class year. Thanks to everyone who participated. You're all doing such amazing things!
Aimee Hart ('97): Right now I'm enjoying senior year and having lots of fun skiing, lifeguarding, and running Indoor Track. I have been accepted to the Coast Guard Academy and will be going there next year. Last season in Cross Country, I received Most Improved Award and was team captain. I was also in our fall production -Smokey Joe's Cafe.
As far as words of wisdom goes, I'd just say that go through high school with the focus of learning for the sake of learning and not just for the grades. School can be fun, only if you want it to be. Take classes that are challenging-- and for all of us future engineers, that means high math classes and all the core science classes. Make sure to establish good relationships with your teachers-- that'll help long after you've finished their courses (teacher recommendations for college). Just keep your focus and try to avoid stress by not procrastinating (one of my own flaws-- I'm working on it). I find that exercise is the best stress buster- so join an in-school or out-of-school sport. It's a good way to meet people and make long-term friendships. And the best thing you can do- is review the notes from class for a few minutes every night- so when that pesty pop quiz or quiz that you didn't study for- you'll be all set! Also, be sure to start the college search early- I think that was one of the bestthings I could have done for myself. I started looking at colleges freshman year- and when you take tours of all of them, you can pick out what's really unique about them. So when you ever take a trip somewhere try to visit some of the colleges around there (and try to have a meal in their cafeteria- that's a factor- what are you gonna be eating for four years of your life?) Other than that- enjoy all four years- because believe it or not they do sort of fly by, so get involved and don't give in to peer pressure- be what makes you happy and healthy.
Thanks for offering such great advice, Amy! --Chrys
Christina Kach ('98): In October I had an exchange student from Worcester England come to live with me and my family as part of a theatre exchange program in my school, Notre Dame Academy. I enjoyed taking Samantha to Boston, the Blue Man Group, showing her our Halloween traditions, and showing her around American schools. In January I, along with 12 girls from my school will travel back to Worcester England to stay with families over there and learn about their culture. When the English exchange students came over they performed 3 short plays on Hamlet. On our visit we will also be performing two one act plays.
I helped in the Electrical engineering department at WPI on one of the activities used in the Camp Reach this past summer. I'm also coaching a basketball team for my local Boys and Girls' club. I'm really enjoying this coaching position since this year is the first time in 6 years I have not tried out for my school's basketball team. I didn't have the time this season to play, but getting to coach is great because I'm still exposed to the game. So far we have won both of our games.
For the 2002 track season I was 3rd in the high hurdling event at the Central Massachusetts Conference "class meets class" meet, and was selected as a member of the C.M.C All Star Team.
I am planning to attend a 4 year college. I haven't started looking at any however. I do know what types of colleges I have in mind, and what types of programs and activities I am looking for. I am interested in many types of engineering, including electrical, mechanical, and theatrical. I am also interested in forensic science. I hope to also study theatre and continue running track.
Amanda Kristoff ('98): I am currently the Production Manager of my school newspaper and also work on our Literary Magazine. I am vice president and co-founder of the computer club at my school. Last spring I learned to play golf and I hope to play on my schools team this year. I haven't done many exciting projects this year in school or traveled much but I do have an awesome volunteer teaching position at my church.
I am planning to attend a four year college. I want to go into Software Engineering or Computer Science. Currently, RIT is my top choice school. Unfortunately not many colleges have Software Engineering as a major, though it did me a favor and narrowed down my choices.
Lindsey Woodhull (TA '02): I am planning on going to a four-year college. It's scary to think that I have to start making serious decisions now that are going to affect what I do with the rest of my life! Right now, I am planning on majoring in biomedical engineering, and I would like to go to school somewhere in New England.
It feels like all I've been doing lately is trying to keep up with my schoolwork and starting to think about colleges. But I guess in reality, I've been doing a lot more than that. I run the mile and the two-mile on our school's winter track team, and I ran on the cross-country team last fall. During the fall I also worked as a soccer referee. I also recently became an editor for our school newspaper, which I'm really excited about. I'm also on a Destination Imagination (DI) team. Some of you may know this as Odyssey of the Mind, or OM. It's a creative problem-solving program. If they have it at your school, I would definitely recommend looking into getting involved! It helps you approach problems (like the design projects at Camp REACH) from a different perspective and in a creative way. It is also a lot of fun!
I hope that all of you from the 2002 group are having a great year in the seventh grade! I miss everyone a ton!
Sofia Wronski ('98): Last year, in my sophomore year, I was in a competition play for the annual Massachusetts High School Drama Guild Festival. We went on to semi-finals, and I won an individual acting award which was awesome! I continue to stay very involved in Drama, participating in every production at Wachusett, and being elected an officer of the drama club. This year, I have joined Best Buddies, a wonderful international program that pairs people with intellectual disabilities in one-to-one friendships with high school students. I took the SATs for the first time in November, and got a 1290, which was pretty cool! I am also very involved with the music department at Wachusett, where I am in an honors choir. I recently auditioned for the Central District Choir, and got into it, and also received a reccomendation to audition for the All-State Choir, a step up from Central District. I helped out at the school's Blood Drive, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. Last summer, I went to a nursing camp at the Mass Medical School, which was extremely interesting, and got me liking medicine even more.
I am planning on applying to a four-year college. I am strongly considering going into nursing, though I have no idea what field of nursing yet! Despite the fact that Engineering is not one of my top interests and that I'm heading toward the field of Medicine, Denise Nicoletti will forever be an inspiration for my goals in life.
Jackie Steinberg ('99): As a project in my AP World History class we had to hold a holiday food drive at school. Last year we raised 6,024 cans and non-perishables, thinking it was a lot. This year we raised over 22,800 items for the Worcester's hungry and homeless people by standing out in the cold in front of grocery stores, collecting around our neighborhoods, and getting donations through our families workplaces and at our school, Doherty High.
Jessica Stevens ('99): This summer, my family and I drove cross-country to California and back. We went to all sorts of neat places. Some of my favorites were Sedona, Arizona; Las Vegas; San Diego; and San Francisco. I'm still doing Tae Kwon Do, and I'm teaching a class for 3-5 year olds, who are so cute! I got my learner's permit in November, and should get my license in May. I am going to apply to Mass Academy for next year.
Tara Calnan ('02): This year for Christmas I went to the Cayman Islands. It is sooooooo beautiful and relaxed... Everyone should go there. At school I'm in Drama, on the JH math team, write for my JH paper, and am active with the Student council. On TV... Court TV is the best channel. If any campers liked Forensics at camp they should watch Forensic Files.

Alex Hall ('02): Hi everyone! This school year has been great. I have tried out for my school's dance club and became goalie for my field hockey team. So far in dance club we have choreographed an African dance and performed it for our portfolio fair on December 4th and 5th. After I finished up field hockey I volunteered at Montachusetts Opportunity Council. Then my first quarter at school was over and I recieved special honor. Now I work at LUK Crisis Center as a G.I.F.T.S peer leader. We have already held an AIDS art gallery on World's aids Day. I received an award for a picture I made for the exhibit. We also have held a teen safety/violence prevention dance on December 13th.
Angela Harvey ('02): I have earned a trip that six people in the whole school get to go to. I am going to Japan in a cultural exchange program for two weeks in February. 36 students in the seventh grade wrote an essay on why it is important to learn about cultural differences and then out of those 36, 14 got picked for the interview with the Marlborough Mayor, Head of the board of City Council or something like that and the Principal of Marlborough Middle School. Then the 14 students were sent letters and my letter started out "Congratulations, you have been selected to be one of the six students to participate in the cultural exchange to Akiruno City, Tokyo, Japan." ( or somewhere along those lines)
Amelja Kukli ('02): I am now in 7th grade at Forest Grove Middle School and I have made lots of new friends. I made it into 1st honors. I am into the student council school program, I am into the church choir because I like to sing. We have done a book report, I did it on "20,000 leagues under the sea" and now I am working on a cell project where we get to build our own cells. I am CYC member where we baby-sit several Sundays to help the CCD program.
Amelja's Joke: Once there was a family and they were really poor. The mother told the older boy to go search for food. He went looking but didn't find anything. One day he was crossing a small desert when he saw a man with a big roll of cheese. It slipped out of his hands and fell into the boy's hands. The boy ran home and they had a big party. His mom asked him what kid of cheese it was, the boy answered it was "nacho cheese" because the man was chasing him all the way home and yelling "it's nacho cheese!" Answer: The man chasing yelled: "it's not your cheese" and the boy thought it was Nacho cheese.
Emily Kupstas ('02): I was a member of the First Lego League through my school. It was the first all girls team and it was pretty fun. We competed at Robonautica that was held at WPI. I am also involved with the youth ministry group at my church. I look forward to seeing some of you guys again soon.
Claudia Santillan-Martinez ('02): I am in the seventh grade at Burncoat Middle School. I am learning many new things. I made honor roll first quarter. Every Thursday morning I go to the Horse Club. In this club I learn everything you need to know about horses. For first quarter, I did a project on "Three Types of Elephants" from Africa. During Thanksgiving vacation, my family and I went to Pennsylvania.
Lauren Morocco ('02): My information is both good and bad. You '02 campers know I LOVED my dog. Well, August 24th, my dog passed away, which is the bad news to me. The good news is I am in honors, and keep up my grades. I got an award in Spanish for doing good, and my average was 98% for the semester. That's pretty much all I have been up to lately!
Christina Ouellette ('02): I participated in the Mass State First Lego League Tournament with my team from Shrewsbury Middle School - which was held at WPI. My team came in third place in team part of the competition. We also won a judges award. The other team from Shrewsbury one the spirit award. I competed with with my team in the King Of the Hill Lego Competiion at Bay Path Regional High School. We won the spirit award.
