History & Mission
Camp Reach is an academic engineering program held each summer at WPI for girls who will be entering the 7th grade in the subsequent fall and are at least 11 years old at the time of the program. The goal of the program is to generate interest in engineering and technology and to enhance self-confidence and motivation toward education. Thirty girls from Massachusetts participate annually in the two-week residential program. Activities include hands-on workshops, a design project for a community organization, field trips, recreational activities, and follow-up programs during the following academic year and throughout their high school years.
Camp Reach was founded in 1997 by Chrys Demetry and the late Denise Nicoletti, two professors at WPI. Initial funding was provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation, Model Projects for Women and Girls.
