General Information

The 32nd Annual Frontiers in Education Conference, sponsored by the IEEE Education Society, the IEEE Computer Society, and the ASEE Educational Research and Methods Division will be held on November 6th - 9th, 2002 in Boston, Massachusetts at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. The exhibit area will open November 7th at 10:00 a.m. and will close November 8th at 5:00 p.m.

The Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE) is one of the two major international engineering education conferences offered every year. The Worcester Polytechnic Institute will be the host institution. Over 500 academic and industry representatives are expected at this conference. Participants will include university presidents, college deans, department chairpersons, faculty in engineering and engineering technology, and industry leaders from throughout the country and the world. The majority of the attendees, however, are engineering and engineering technology faculty.

The Frontiers in Education exhibits have become a very popular and rewarding tradition for both attendees and exhibitors. Booth availability is intentionally limited to assure the maximum professional contact of participating exhibitors with the attendees. To insure maximum exposure, all activities will be on the mezzanine and conference center levels. The exhibits will be located in the Plaza Ballroom along with the e-mail stations and the refreshment breaks. A special "Focus on Exhibits" session is also planned for Friday, November 8th, 2002 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

In the past several years, booth space has been very popular, with a high percentage of exhibitors returning and all available booths taken.

Imperial and Plaza Ballrooms

Vendors and association exhibits will be located in the Imperial and Plaza Ballrooms across from the registration area. Displays will include materials, equipment, textbooks, software, and other state-of-the-art tools applicable to engineering education. We thank all of these vendors for making FIE 2002 a meaningful experience for all participants.

Exhibit Hours

The Exhibit Hall will be open 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Focus on Exhibits

A special "Focus on Exhibits" session is scheduled for 9:30-11:00 a.m. Friday. The break for this event is sponsored by the National Collegiate Inventors & Innovators Alliance (NCIIA).

Exhibitor Presentations/Workshop

Exhibitor presentations are scheduled Thursday in the Clarendon Room using the technical session time schedule. Electronics Workbench and National Instruments will present a workshop on "Combining the Electronics Classroom and Lab" in the 2:00-3:30 p.m. time session. Check for additional exhibitor sessions at the conference.

Exhibitor Workshop

Combining the electronics classroom and lab:

A workshop introducing a new software interface between EWB Multisim and LabVIEW

Presenters
Scott Duncan, Director of Marketing, Electronics Workbench
Ravi Marawar, Academic Program Manager, National Instruments

A favourite teaching strategy of electronics educators is to have students first simulate a circuit, then breadboard the circuit and perform measurements on it, and finally to compare the simulation results with the measured output of the real circuit. This 1 1/2 hour workshop will feature the demonstration of a new software interface that enables the direct comparison of real signals acquired using National Instruments LabVIEW and data acquisition hardware with simulation data produced by Electronics Workbench Multisim. We will create sample circuits in Multisim and perform live measurements using LabVIEW on the same circuit built on a protoboard. Teaching strategies for the application of the interface will be discussed. Attendees will receive a CD containing a white paper providing a technical description of the interface, a sample lab assignment utilizing the interface, multiple sample files, and demo versions of LabVIEW and Multisim.

Breaks

All breaks on Thursday and Friday will be held in the Exhibit Hall. All breaks on Saturday will be held on the Mezzanine level.

E-mail Stations

E-mail stations will be located in the Imperial Ballroom on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday they will be located in the Fairfield Room.

Who Should Exhibit

  • Publishers-- display your engineering and engineering technology textbooks, training manuals, and associated software on technical writing and new technologies. Publisher exhibitors have lauded FIE exhibits as a major source for follow-up contacts and as an excellent informal setting for personal contacts.

  • Computer Software and Hardware Companies-- demonstrate your products to your most consistent users.

  • Lab Equipment Companies-- present your latest equipment for all engineering fields. Attendees will represent virtually all engineering disciplines.

  • Manufacturers and Consulting Services-- introduce state-of-the-art equipment, tools, and programs geared to educators looking forward in the new century.

  • Professional Societies-- provide assistance and offer new techniques in engineering and engineering education.

Sponsorships

For even more exposure, consider becoming a Corporate Affiliate. Affiliation monies in the past have funded conference events such as plenary speakers, "theme" breaks, lunches, receptions, and the rental of audio/visual equipment. Another way would be the donation of give-away items (with your company logos). Appropriate recognition will be given on our web site, which will include your company logo, in conference publications, and signage at the conference. Also, affiliates will be recognized at the event and may be invited to address the attendees (depending on the purpose of the event).

Typical financial support for the conference has ranged from $500 to $10,000. If your organization cannot afford full support of an activity, we would welcome any support, be it financial or otherwise.

In addition to the participation and communication advantages listed above, the Corporate Affiliation support helps to keep registration costs low, enabling more attendance and enhancing further growth of the FIE Conference.

To become a Corporate Affiliate and/or inquire about additional opportunities, simply mail, fax, e-mail, or call
