Boston and Cambridge
Boston, "the land of the bean and the cod," still bears strong
imprints from American Revolutionary times. Boston is a great
walking city, with the world-famous Freedom Trail winding
past such historical landmarks as Old North Church, the Old
State House, and Faneuil Hall. More recent history is represented
by the John F. Kennedy Library. Cultural venues include the
Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Symphony, and the Isabella
Stuart Gardner Museum. Boston and Cambridge are home to some
of the world's greatest educational institutions, including
Harvard and MIT.
Salem and the North Shore
Just north of Boston is Salem, one of the country's oldest
cities and a major center of seafaring in the 18th and 19th
centuries. Picturesque streets and wharves recall that era,
as do world-renowned museums and structures such as the House
of the Seven Gables. Also nearby are lovely Cape Ann and Gloucester,
another seafaring town.
Plymouth, Cape Cod, and the Islands
Visit the spot in Plymouth where the Pilgrims landed in 1620,
then continue on to the beautiful beaches and charming villages
of Cape Cod. From the cape, a short ferry ride brings you
to Martha's Vineyard--or a somewhat longer trip lands you
on Nantucket, with its well-preserved history from the whaling
era.
West of Boston
After visiting the historic sites of the Freedom Trail in
Boston, travel west through, in Longfellow's words, "every
Middlesex village and farm." In particular, visit Lexington
and Concord, where the shot heard round the world signaled
the beginning of the American Revolution. Roads farther west
take you to cities such as Worcester, which played major roles
in the industrial revolution, and even farther, you reach
the picturesque hills of the Berkshires
