Mission Brief
RoboNautica 8 will be held December 20, 2008 on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The main event -- the "Climate Connections" robotics competition -- takes place in Harrington Auditorium.
During the day the nearby Campus Center to be interviewed by judges for technical achievement awards and to present their Research Projects. Visit the Directions & Campus Information page for a detailed map of the campus and location of these buildings.
Qualifying Matches
Each team will get 5 qualifying matches spaced throughout the day. These matches will begin at 9:10AM and run until 1:30PM with a 45-minute lunch break in the middle. Each teams lowest score will be dropped and the remaining four scores will be added to give each team their Qualifying Score. Teams will then be ranked from 1 to 64 by their Qualifying Score.
This ranking will be used to determine the order of play during the playoff matches and will be given to the judges to contribute to the Champion's Award scoring.
Playoff (or Elimination) Matches
Starting at 2PM, all teams will participate in the playoff matches to determine the winner of the Robot Performance awards. Each team will receive a playoff bracket in their registration packet and you are encouraged to fill it out so you can follow how your team will proceed through the playoff matches. The bracket will have rank numbers filled in for the first round and space to hand write in the correct team number for each of those ranks.
The playoff matches will be single elimination. Teams will play against the other team on their table, meaning whichever of the two teams on the table scores highest will proceed to the next round. When it is down to the final four teams, these teams will play on two competition tables and the highest score of all four teams will be the Robot Performance winner.
Technical Achievement and Research Judging
Each team will meet with two sets of judges -- one for technical achievement in robotic design, construction and programming, and one for the presentation of a research project. These interviews are scheduled back-to-back. Ample time in the master schedule has been allotted for travel to and from the judging rooms at the Campus Center to ensure that judging interviews do not conflict with participation in a qualifying match.
Teamwork Judging
Judges will be walking around the pit and competition area evaluating teams on their teamwork. They may also ask to interview your team when they are available in your pit area. There is not scheduled times for these judges to meet with your team, so if you are about to leave for a match or judging, you can inform these judges and as them to come back at a later time.
