Remembering Sam Mencow's Quiet Dignity

To the Editor:

I was frozen in my tracks when I opened the Journal to see the picture of Sam Mencow '37 ("A Man for All Seasons," Summer 1997). It was my honor and pleasure to work with him over several years on various committees at WPI. I recall many long evenings and Saturday mornings made less difficult because of his presence. He was always a wealth of information. But more than that, he personified the quiet dignity of so many of the older alums and the devotion they have to the University. In whatever capacity I am privileged to serve WPI in the future, it will always be a little sadder because I will not be seeing Sam.

In a caption for the photo on page 20 of the Summer 1997 issue, we incorrectly identified the alumnus shown here. He is Greg Scott '77, president of Scott Software Systems Inc.

A photograph on page 32 of the same issue was attributed to the wrong photographer. It was taken by Alison Hampton, graphic arts specialist at the New England Regional Primate Research Center.
