Field Hockey Off to a 2-0 Start

By Courtney Estaphen - Tech News Staff

Thursday night the women's field hockey team hosted their first game of the season against Merrimack College. The team looked strong out there with the first goal scored by Co- Captain Jessica Hoepf on a beautiful corner shot assisted by the other Co-Captain Kristen Busby. This season there are fourteen women on the team, and most are underclassmen, making the team young, but they still seemed to be working well together. The second goal of the game was scored by the sophomore forward Liz Whittaker, she had a strong solo shot on goal hitting the backboard of the goal with strength. This is Liz's second season on the team and she is showing much improvement on the field. She has more confidence and strength this season than last and holds the starting left wing position well. The Engineers held a 2-0 lead through the first half, but with 25:04 left on the clock Merrimack got a lucky goal by Kim Pacsay from Westford Massachusetts, leaving the final score 2 to 1 WPI Engineers. Good game ladies!

To continue their success, the Engineers played our arched rivals Worcester State College on Saturday at 1 o'clock on Alumni Field. This game seemed to be a tougher match up then compared to Merrimack, but the women hung tough and played hard. The WPI field hockey team has always had strong defensive skills, and these skills showed up on Saturday. The Senior women on the team, Kristen Busby, Jessica Hoepf, and Rachel Maltais demonstrated there experience and knowledge to help the team earn another W. Rachel scored the one and only goal of the game in the first half with a strong hit from inside the circle. The Engineers could not have had such success though without their sophomore goalie from Westwood Massachusetts Elizabeth Heneberry. Beth played an excellent game with many strong saves in the goal. The Engineers are off to a great first week and we wish you luck with the rest. WPI will host Bridgewater State College on Thursday, September 14 at 7pm on Alumni Field. Come out and show support!
