Ouch. In the annual battle of the Engineers, RPI trounced visiting WPI, 45-0, giving the home team their first win of the season and the first shutout since 1998. The game, known as the 21st Annual Transit Trophy, gave RPI their fourth consecutive Transit Trophy and the 12th overall (there has been one tie). WPI falls to 1-3 on the season and 41-46-3 in the all-time series with Rensselaer, which began in 1894.
The RPI defense forced six turnovers and held WPI to just 37 yards rushing and 139 yards passing. Seventeen players made at least two tackles for the home team, and 10 different players ran with the ball for a total of 243 yards rushing.
For WPI, three quarterbacks combined to go 19-for-38 for 139 yards and two interceptions while senior co-captain Jeff Martin (Fairhaven, MA) had nine tackles.
The good guys return to the friendly turf at Alumni Field next Saturday, when Kings Point comes to Worcester. Last season, WPI was victorious on the road, 49-28. Kickoff is at 2:00pm, immediately following the women's field hockey game. Both events are free, so come on by and support your student-athletes!
