Beware rampant immaturity on campus

I don't know how many of you have noticed, but it seems to me like the college atmosphere doesn't breed very mature people. I'm now finishing my senior year and in the three previous years I have been here, I have seen very few example of mature responsible people. I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way. So many of you may be very mature and responsible, but there are so many instances where people act immature, that they almost completely counteract the mature actions.

Take for example putting soap or eggs on the fountain when it gets turned off at night. Yeah it may look cool, and my be amusing for a little while, but overall, it is rather disgusting. Now Plant Services personnel have to clean up after the "children" who want to make a name for themselves. There are some things that can be done to the fountain that don't incur a major clean up. For instance, putting a traffic cone over the water spout. These types of pranks are a lot more responsible because less money has to be used in order to clean up the mess.

Often when I'm in the library and working there, I see people eating or drinking. I'm pretty sure everyone knows they aren't supposed to be eating or drinking in the library. Many of you, no actually all of you, can leave for ten or twenty minute to go eat your lunch or snack, even during the winter. If you don't realize now, you will soon, that many books get destroyed every year because people are eating and drinking near them. Bugs like to eat and they have found one of the best habitats in the library because of all the crumbs and spills left. People keep complaining about how much this school costs them, but they are willing to eat in the library causing the library to spend thousands of dollars replacing or repairing books.

My whole reason for writing this article is for two personal instances that have happened recently. The first happened last February on one of the coldest days of the year. I was walking down the street, almost ready to cross, and a car with a load of boys screeched around the corner almost hitting me. I laugh at this in retrospect, but at the time I was deeply disappointed. I was wearing a hat (I love to wear hats), so it wasn't unusual, but I had also put my hood up over my hat to protect my ears. The guys as they were screeching around the corner, were yelling "Ducky, Ducky, Ducky.... Quack, Quack, Quack, Ducky, Ducky." I, of course, gave them the finger (oh so mature on my part). The thing that disappointed me the most was that we go to one of the most prestigious schools in the United States and our students can't even show one ounce of decorum. (I'm not excluding myself mind you).

I know, I know, things like this happen everywhere, and even worse things happen with people twice our age, but shouldn't it follow that college students should act more mature than high school students. The main reason I'm writing this article is because a while back, a person or persons decided that my car was the perfect canvas for some of their artwork. Granted a key and glass don't make for the best tools of the trade, but the picture wasn't even that artistic... To be perfectly honest I expected something a little less subtle. After having my insurance pay $1200 to replace my window, I figured I should warn the general public that there is immaturity everywhere even on this campus, so try to protect yourself.
