Greeks show spirit during Greek Spirit Week

Every year members of the various campus fraternities and sororities host a series of friendly competitions. The aim of Greek Spirit Week is to boost morale, get involved with the campus community, and usher in a new academic year. This year's theme for the event was "Some follow trends, others create legends".

This year the events included a blood drive, a banner competition, the Greek Olympics, a formal day, and the Greek Talent Show. Additionally, "Penny Wars", an event run by Alpha Chi Rho (AXP), encourages students to give extra pennies to their favorite organization and give any other loose change to their not-so-favorite organization. Each club was given a red cup with their logo on it to collect any change students had to give. Pennies were worth 1 point. Everything else was worth negative points (-5 for nickels, -10 for dimes, etc.). Even non-greek organizations were allowed to participate since SocComm, the Science Fiction Society, and Jesus all had cups. The winning organization donates all of the money to the charity of its choice.

The Greek Olympics were held on Sunday, Sept. 17. There were eight events worth points in the Greek Spirit Week competition. These events included a frisbee throw, an egg toss, a three legged race, and a pie eating contest. Furthermore, fraternities and sororities which had a BBQ running were awarded Greek Spirit Week points. At the end of the day AXP placed first, Theta Chi placed second, with Zeta Psi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) tied for third.

On Thursday, the second annual Greek Spirit Week talent show was held in Alden Hall. FIJI started the night off with a live cover of Pearl Jam's "What". Over the course of the show members of the various fraternities and sororities entertained spectators with dance routines, comedy skits, and band performances. A comical Nsync rendition by Theta Chi took first place. AXP, which placed second, performed a humorous "variety show" that included The Bloodhound Gang's "Bad Touch" and the Croc Hunter vs. the Wedge Rats. SAE placed third with a band act that played "Pretty Woman" and included an appearance by a cross-dressed SAE brother.

The last event of Greek Spirit Week, however, will not be held for over a month. There is a float competition for WPI homecoming which will be held in November. Until then, the official results of Greek Spirit Week will hang in the balance. The standing prior to Thursday night's talent show had SAE in first, AXP in second, and Zeta Psi in third.
