Volleyball, Cross Country finish week strong

The women's volleyball team finished the week with two wins, defeating Atlantic Union last Thursday, 15-8, 14-16, 15-6, 15-9 and Becker last Saturday, 15-6, 15-2, 15-8. Their record now stands at 6-5 overall, 1-2 in NEWMAC conference play. Junior co-captain Rachel Zimet (Trumansburg, NY) led the attack with 25 kills Thursday and 24 Saturday, while recording a pair of blocks in each game.

In the Atlantic Union match, senior setter and co-captain Christine Biscotti (Glastonbury, CT) had 32 assists, while Bonnie Henderson (Chester, NH) led the way with 4 aces to go along with 6 digs.

Against Becker, freshman Pamela Comey (Cumberland, RI) served up 5 aces and compiled 19 assists, and sophomore Kristen Lafond (Exeter, RI) had 5 kills and 2 blocks.

This week, the women host MIT tonight (7pm, Harrington Auditorium) and play in the City Tourney at Clark University on Saturday at 9am.

The men's and women's cross country teams hosted the City Meet at Institute Park on Saturday, and both squads turned in strong performances.

The men won their meet, led by juniors Justin Lutz and Lucas Churchill (Gloucester, ME). Lutz, from Walpole, MA, led the pack with a time of 26:23. Churchill was second, finishing in 26:51. Attleboro, MA native Alex Curry (27:17) and John Gleeson (27:38) also finished in the top 10 for the Engineers on the 5-mile course.

The women finished second on a 3.1-mile course to a strong Assumption team. Senior captain Harmonie Hawley of Pine Beach, NJ crossed the line first for WPI, with a time of 18:47, good enough for second overall. Sarah Belfry finished fourth overall, in 20:19.

The Tri-State Meet is up next for both the men and the women, starting at 10am this Saturday.
