WPI Field Hockey continues to struggle

By Courtney Estaphan - Tech News Staff

Last Tuesday night, October 3rd,the Engineers played against Smith College on Alumni field, it was a fighting battle. Just two weeks ago these women were playing without a full number of players on the field, they have conquered that problem, and now they just need to put the ball in the goal. Senior Co-Captain Jessica Hoepf (Hampstead, NH) knows how to get the job done, with the one corner called the entire game for WPI, she had a picture perfect goal that slammed the backboard. This occurred in the first few minutes of the second half. WPI began the battle with a score of 1-0, but it would not last. Not five minutes passed that Smith Senior Forward came down and scored the tying goal off a deflected stick into the net. Sophomore Goalie, Beth Heneberry (Westwood, MA) played a strong game, she kept a lot of goals out of the net this game. Smith scored their second and final goal to win the game shortly after their first. This time Amanda Clemons (Colchester, VT) scored this one goal in a tight fight in the circle. Heneberry also had a penalty save with six minutes left on the clock, she knew right were the shot was going and had a beautiful save, nice job Beth. The final score was 2-1. The Engineers hold a record of 3-6-0 overall, and a NEWMAC conference record of 0-3. Smith has an overall record of 3-7-1, and are 2-1 in the conference. WPI's next home game is tonight on Alumni Field versus Mt. Holyoke at 7:15pm, come out and show your support; the more fans, the more energy, and maybe a win. Good luck Engineers!!
