Individual efforts highlight end of fall season

With just one remaining contest in the 2000 WPI fall sports season (football at Plymouth State, 12pm Saturday), many of us have begun to prepare for wrestling, basketball, and swimming. However, several student-athletes quietly turned in strong performances over break.

On October 10th, senior forward Beth Gilbert scored a goal and added an assist in the Engineers' 4-0 women's soccer win over Mount Holyoke. The Killingly, CT native broke the school records for most goals in a career (26) and most points in a career (75). Both records were previously held by Jamie Szafarowicz, who played from 1996-1999. Congratulations Beth!

On the cross-country paths, senior Justin Lutz (Walpole, MA) finished at 27:41, second overall in the Regis Invitational, after finishing first in the three meets prior to that. On the women's side, senior Harmonie Hawley (Pine Beach, NJ) turned in a time of 20:17, good enough to win the individual title, her third straight victory. Freshman Sarah Bellfy (Williamsport, PA) finished 6th overall at 21:17 for the Engineers.

In women's volleyball, junior Rachel Zimet (Trumansburg, NY) was leading the NEWMAC in kills per game (4.77). The multi-sport star was also fourth in the conference in hitting, at last check.
