Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals are human too

Alexander Haley
President of BiLaGa

On Tuesday, November 7th, an actual destructive event occurred here at WPI. A letter to the editor was published, and in that letter a student's views about the National Coming Out Day chalkings were broadcast. Unfortunately, this student's message was not a message of understanding, compassion, or of human advancement. It was a direct stab at the attempts for unity and freedom that Bilaga strives for, and no religious impunity shall hide that act.

Speaking for the voice of Bilaga, we as an organization are very upset that such hatred exists in fellow human beings. Are we not all born on the same planet; do we not share the same air; can such a sharp line be drawn between all humans? How can the passions of equality and acceptance be in opposition to the formation of good character? How does the molestation of a decent student group's message foster goodness? We are all of the human species; there isn't a division between the good and the evil. No moral palette can cover the full spectrum of a human being, and no one person can arbitrarily judge another.

Expectedly, this article caused a lot of anger, fear, and disbelief for the people who read it. In fact, at the Bilaga meeting Thursday night, our attendance was significantly higher than usual. Why? The inevitable answer is that people care when someone maligns another. Divisions spring from misunderstanding, and hatred from fear and rumor. Without tolerance and understanding, the world will be deprived of the benefits that arise from acknowledging the unity of the human race.

[A technical note: The article cited MassNews as a source. It should be clearly known that MassNews is a biased source, and the editors of the paper themselves claim to be "A newspaper for moderates, conservatives and Libertarians who live or work in Massachusetts." I encourage readers to explore other sources for different perspectives on the event.]
