The Hawk Tournament held Saturday November 12th was the WPI wrestling team's first of the year. WPI placed 3rd out of 15 teams behind only AIC and Bridgewater State. AIC won the tourney with 168.5 points, followed by Bridgewater State with 120, and we finished with 111 points. Bridgewater State is ranked 5th in the pre-season poll, and WPI is ranked 7th by the New England Division III coaches poll. Among individuals, there were seven Engineers who placed at the Hawk Tourney, including one winner.

Placing first was junior Matt Lucas (Haverhill,MA) in the 197-pound weight class. A pleasant surprise was freshman Anthony Paoletta (Danville, NH), who finished second in the 125-pound weight class. Co-Captain Willie Welsh (Jamesport,NY), finished third at the 285-pound weight class. Among those placing fourth were 125-pound senior co-captain, Nick Macsata (Enfield, CT), and 174-pound freshman Dave Capone (Lincoln, RI). Placing fifth was 141-pound sophomore Tejal Patel (Tewksbury,MA), and 197-pound sophomore Lee Emmett (Concord, NH). "Overall, I was pleased considering it was our first time out this season," said Head Coach Phil Grebinar, now in his 29th year of coaching. "I was particularly pleased with how well some of our younger guys finished up, especially Paoletta and Capone. Capone had to wrestle seven times on the day in order to place fourth. His day was more grueling than most. Of course, some of our upper-classmen did themselves proud as well," added Grebinar. "I was especially happy for Lucas who gave a great account of himself." This was an honorable way to begin the season for the WPI Engineers and we wish you the best in your season ahead.
