SGA

Committee members were appointed at our last meeting, and now the fun begins! At the SGA Retreat, we set our goals for the year and now we're working towards them with all the energy we can muster! Special thanks go to Vice-President Janelle Smith, who organized the event, and Jim McLaughlin, who helped bring some pep. Representatives of SocComm, Tech News, Pep Band, Cycling Club, and Peddler came and informed us that they'll be serving as liaisons between their organization and us. If you want to represent your group, come to our meetings. They're open to everyone and held every Tuesday at 6 PM in the Lower Wedge.

FIRST Robotics Team

The WPI/Mass Academy FIRST Robotics team is off to a busy start preparing for the 2001 competition. In the days since Kick-Off, held on January 6, 2001, the team has been working on design plans for this year's robot, Gompei 2001. The design plans are now in place and are currently being modified. The key aspect of this year's game is the use of teamwork in order to suceed. The game is played on a playing field with small robots that

are designed by FIRST teams from around the nation. The robots must accomplish certain tasks in order to earn points, such as placing small balls in goals or balancing large balls on top of goals. WPI has been participating in FIRST Robtics since the start, and this year they are celebrating their 10th Anniversary. The FIRST Robotics team will be participating in three different competitions this year and is looking forward to a very exciting season.

Newman Club

Well we will really be rolling this term as our Executive Board has put together a very full schedule for Term C. We start this Friday night with one of our famous Video and Pasta nights beginning at 5:30 PM at the Religious Center. Nick and Erin claim they are great chefs. On February 11th we will be going snow tubing right after our 11:30 AM Mass. On Friday night, February 16th we will hold our traditional Valentine's Day Party at the Religious Center. Again we like to remind everyone that you are always welcome at our Newman events even if you are not a member of the club.

Our Faith and Discussion Group will be meeting every Wednesday night during the term. Sessions are from 8:00 PM to 9:00PM. We will be electing our new officers at the end of February.

We have set the date for our Appalachia in Worcester Project. It will take place on Monday, March 12th. Due to the fact that classes for Term D start on a Tuesday, we are forced to limit the project to one day this year. More information on this event will be in a future edition of Tech News.

We have several other events planned but we have yet to set the date for them. As soon as we confirm the dates, we will be announcing the events.

Christian Bible Fellowship

I hope all of you are having a fantastic week! If you're not, here's a reason to: Jesus Christ defeated death! By his resurrection from the dead, he has the power to give eternal life to all who will repent of their sins and believe in him. Isn't that just way too cool? CBF is having our two regular meetings this week. Tuesday Night Prayer is on Tuesday (9:30, Founders 204), and Friday Night Fellowship is on Friday (7:00, Lower Wedge). The 2001 Navigators Northeast Winter Conference is also coming up soon (I've been to three - they're great). For details about that, you can e-mail Paul Carter (cbf@wpi.edu). The hymn of the week is "Blessed Assurance."

ACM

ACM kicked off the term with an exciting meeting. After correcting the infamous ghetto donut dilemma we had free edible food for all.

Highlights of the meeting included giving away free hardware from the Sin lab, special sale of Celeron processors, and reviving the ACM vs. IEEE rivalry. Brad Snow also gave a presentation on the porting of SNES9X to the iPAQ handheld for both Linux and PocketPC (WinCE 3.0).

ACM has scheduled some very exciting upcoming presentations including: Professor Ciaraldi will be presenting "The Software Engineer as Artist and Detective" on Jan 25th, 6pm, Kaven 116, Slashdot co-founder Jeff "Hemos" Bates on Feb 8th, 6pm, in Perrault Hall. Also we will be having a tour of the Intel Fab facility, in late February. So join ACM, we have skills.

Phi Kappa Theta

On Wednesday, January 17th, Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity invited the electrical engineering faculty to a formal dinner at the house. Upon arrival at the blue house, the professors got a chance to meet the students of the Massachusetts Lambda chapter. It was a great opportunity for the faculty to get to know some of the students. It was also an opportunity for the students to familiarize themselves with some of the most influential people in their near future. The elegant dinner was then served in out red house, which was prepared by brothers Andrew Cieri and Lee Emmett. The brothers would like to thank the ECE professors for coming down and sharing a good time.
