The WPI women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak by returning home and dominating Coast Guard all afternoon, earning a 63-44 victory last Saturday. The win brings the team to 1-1 in NEWMAC conference play, 6-9 overall.

The Engineers came out firing in the first half, putting up 38 shots and taking a 35-17 lead into the locker room. The Bears would get closer, but the home team was just too much. Becki Duhaime was red-hot off the bench, going a perfect 5 for 5 shooting from the field. Along with a game-high 10 points, the freshman from Danville, NH also had an offensive rebound and 2 steals… all in just 16 minutes of play. Erin Jabs and Helene Gwizdak also had 10 points and 5 rebounds each.

As usual, the power duo of freshman Allison Wing (Brewer, ME) and junior Rachel Zimet stood out on the stat sheet. Wing had 9 points, but more impressive were her 9 assists and 6 steals. Coming into the game, she was tied for first in the conference with 43 steals, and tied for 6th with 35 assists. With her performance, she is sure to move up in both categories.

Zimet (Trumansburg, NY) tacked on 8 points and 3 assists, but she was most commanding under the basket, hauling in 14 rebounds. She was among the conference leaders in many categories coming into Saturday's contest, including second place in rebounding (138), third in steals (between Wing and senior co-captain Beth Gilbert, with 42), and tied for 6th with Wing in assists. Zimet is also WPI's leading scorer, averaging 12.7 points per game.

Gilbert (Killingly, CT) added a pair of assists, 3 rebounds, and 8 points in the winning effort. Sophomore Becky Macdonald also had a strong game, with 8 points off the bench. And let us not forget the WPI Pep Band - they played a great set all the way through, from the national anthem to the final buzzer. Keep up the good work!

Tonight, the women play Springfield at home. Tipoff is at 7pm in Harrington Auditorium, and admission is free.
