WPI publishes new magazine for west coast alumni

by Joe Frawley
News Editor

This January, the WPI Communications Group began a new publication, titled WPI West. This publication is intended for alumni and friends of WPI who live on the West Coast. WPI West can be found online at http://www.wpi.edu/+WPIWest.

WPI West is part of a new effort on the part of WPI to connect with those alumni on the West Coast. California is home to the third-largest population of WPI alumni, with over 1,200. As part of this effort, President Parrish is going to four events in California the week of January 28. As part of the trip, on Tuesday January 30, he will join the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ronald L. Zarrella '71, who is president of GM North America, to dedicate the Silicon Valley Project Center.

The first issue of WPI West features three stories about alumni who are doing different types of work on the West Coast. One of those stories is about Phillip Baker, who graduated from WPI in 1965.

Baker co-founded Think Outside Inc. and currently is president of the company. One of Think Outside's products is the Stowaway line of keyboards. These keyboards are full-size, but they can also be folded-up to pocket size. Last November, PC Magazine gave the Stowaway line of keyboards its Technical Excellence Award for Best Design. The keyboards are distributed by Palm Inc. for the Palm PDA's, and also by Targus Group International Inc. for the Handspring Visor and for the Pocket PC's distributed by Sony, Hewlett-Packard, and Compaq.

Another story in WPI West is about Nancy Pimental, who graduated from WPI with a chemical engineering degree in 1987. She was a writer for Comedy Central's comedy series South Park. She currently is serving as co-host of the game show Win Ben Stein's Money, which is also shown on Comedy Central. Pimental is the scriptwriter of a movie, tentatively titled The Sweetest Thing. It will be a romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz. The movie will begin filming in March.

With the large number of WPI alumni and friends that live of the West Coast, it is good to see that WPI is making efforts to communicate with them more directly.
