Club Corner
New England, and Massachusetts in particular, is a hotbed of high school Fencing! Many of them have participants who fence with college-level skill. On Saturday, January 27th, the WPI Fencing club took 7 of their fencers to take part in a friendly meet with several high school teams. We fenced St. Johns Prep School from Danvers, Commonwealth School from Boston, and Concord-Carlisle High School from Concord. The following Fencing team members participated in the meet: Epee Rick Ballard '04 5 wins out of 7 bouts Unfortunately as we only had partial teams - a full team has three people for each weapon - and some people had to leave early, our match scores against most complete high school teams were fairly low. However, this was a good preparation for the upcoming New England championships. Coach Brown wants to remind all fencers who are interested in fencing for WPI at the championships to come regularly to practice, as we only have a few weeks of preparation left!
Isn't God's love for us incredible? He sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins! How great is that? And he made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our sins! Due to the upcoming conference this weekend, CBF will not be having Friday Night Fellowship this week. We will still be having our other weekly meeting, Tuesday Night Prayer, at our regular time and place (9:30, Founders 204). Happy birthday, Matt!
Our Agenda Committee met last Friday night and set up the agenda for our Executive Board meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, February 7th. Also our Nominating Committee met to nominate members for the various offices for next year's Newman Club. Besides being nominated by the nominating committee, any member of the club can be nominated through a petition signed by twenty-five members. That petition must be submitted to the nominating committee by midnight of February 18th. Our elections will be held on Sunday, February 25th and the new officers will be installed on Sunday, April 22nd. We have decided to make the Saint Anthony's Closet on Sheridan Street here in the City of Worcester as our Appalachia in Worcester Project. This closet which gives out clothing to the poor, has several showrooms that needs painting and papering. The project will take place on Monday, March 12th. This year the project is limited to one day due to the way Term D is scheduled. Next week's edition of the Tech News will carry information as to how and when you may sign up for the project. Our Faith and Discussion Group continues to meet every Wednesday night at the Religious Center from 8:00 to 9:00 PM. Please feel free to come down and join the discussion. Sunday Mass continues to be in Alden Memorial at 11:30 AM. Ash Wednesday this year is on Wednesday, February 28th and Masses will be at 12:00(noon) and 5:00 PM in Alden Memorial Chapel.
Only a few weeks into the new millennium, and the SGA is already handing out cash! Due to an unfortunate incident last term, the Pep Band lost its drum set, and the SGA has given them the money to purchase another set of wham-banging percussion instruments. The SGA would like to commend Neil Beardsley, President of Pep Band, for his efforts to recover the lost drum set last term, even though the items have yet to be found. If you know where they might be, please contact him at nabeards@wpi.edu. Thanks! The SGA also heard a funding request from the Glee Club. However, this request was tabled until the following week due to miscommunication on both sides. The Committee on Public Relations would like to announce that Senator Profiles are currently under construction. These profiles will provide everyone on campus information about their representatives and will be posted on the SGA website: http://www.wpi.edu/~sga/. Special thanks go to Brian Sperlongano and Conor Walsh who are helping to make this project possible. To find out how we work and what we do, come to our meetings held every Tuesday at 6 PM in the Lower Wedge.
We will be holding a social lunch meeting this Tuesday in Gompei's from noon to 1PM. We are also holding our weekly discussion/support group tonight from 7-9M. Contact bilaga for the location. The International Student Council has been up to a great start for the term. The Turkish Coffee Night was organized on Friday, Jan 26th as a part of ISC's weekly Entertainment Nights. The event was full of enjoyment and fun. We arranged a midnight breakfast last Wednesday as an effort to give everyone a break while studying for midterm exams and working on assignments. The breakfast was very well attended and appreciated by many. We look forward to organizing such events in near future. Our upcoming events include the Annual Ski Trip to Wachusett Mountain on Feb 17th, which is co-sponsored by the Residential Services. Sign-up sheets for the trip are available at the International House and the Wedge. Take advantage of special discount for ISC members and on-campus students and enjoy free continental breakfast. For more information about the trip, please check the ISC bulletin board in Morgan or contact us at isc@wpi.edu.

We will also be focusing on concerns with Bush's new cabinet as well as cuts in funding for family planning and the increased role of religion Bush is pushing. Some members attended a workshop on organizing campaigns by Heather Dowey from the Wilderness Society that GAEA sponsored on January 29. We are looking forward to having Prof. Heaton speak sometime within the next few weeks. Some upcoming events of interest include Peter Lowitt speaking on creating a sustainable community at 5:00pm at Clark University, Sackler Science Center N104 on Feb. 7. On Feb. 9, "Responding to Conflict: Recognition and Resolution" will take place at Becker College, Worcester Campus College Academic Center (West and Cedar Streets) from 12:30pm-3pm. This spring break, the Men's Glee Club will be touring Ireland and performing the King David of Honnegger with members of the WPI Concert Choir, Alden Voices, and Clark University. Members of the WPI Orchestra will be providing the accompaniment. In total, there will be 49 singers and musicians from WPI on the tour. The Glee Club typically goes on an international tour every two years. Most recently, the club has toured the Czech Republic, England, and Italy. The club often tours alone, but in the past we have performed overseas with Regis College, Wells College, and Clark University, among others. The tour of Ireland will include stops in Galway, Dublin, and WPI's sister college in Limerick, among others. We will be performing the King David at three concerts and a special concert of the music of Aaron Copeland. This tour will be a monumental one for the Glee Club. For many seniors such as myself, this tour will be the culmination of four years of singing at WPI. For others, tour will be a week of building brotherhood within the club and building friendships with the other singers of WPI and Clark. For the club, however, this tour marks the end of an era, for this will be the last year that the WPI Men's Glee Club will be under the directorship of Prof. Louis Curran. In his 35 years at WPI, Prof. Curran has strove to put our music program on a par with Smith College, Harvard, Yale, and many other distinguished schools. From our past performances with the Concord Orchestra, Harvard-Radcliffe, Smith College and others, and of course from our upcoming tour of Ireland, it is easy to see how far the club has come thanks to Louis. Club won't be the same without you.
Practice is mandatory this week. Avery will be facilitating the sessions. We also discussed the Game Night, which will be held on February 16th, in the Lower Wedge from 9pm till Midnight. There will be plenty of games, free food, and prizes will be given away! It should be lots of fun, so stop by!
