Feel the Love... Masque Presents the Don Perlimplín

by Jim "The Roy" Nichols
Class of 2002

February 8th - 10th at 8:00 pm Masque will be presenting its own adaptation of the farce that quickly transforms into tragedy: The Love of Don Perlimplín for Belisa in His Garden by Federico Garcia Lorca. When Don Perlimplín was younger he knew a woman who strangled her husband; he then realized he didn't want any part of marriage.

Then along comes hot little Belisa. Perlimplín sees her, quickly falls in love with her, and they marry. The only problem is that Belisa is quite young and beautiful. Perlimplín is unable to "satisfy" her and she takes many lovers to quench her thirst for a beauty equal to hers and other, more carnal desires. But Perlimplín begins to love her even more, and the fable has begun…

Federico Garcia Lorca was one of the greatest Spanish playwrights of the 20th century, if not all time. The Love of Don Perlimplín for Belisa in His Garden is not well known because Lorca's life was tragically cut short during the Spanish Civil War and thus he never had a chance to achieve acclaim as a playwright during his lifetime. Lorca was a very successful poet and that is evident as his poetry infuses the play.

A Masque member, aspiring playwright, and in general, smart guy (smart ass) Jim "The Roy" Nichols adapted the script for performance by Masque. The play was originally written in Spanish and many versions of English translations were compiled and fleshed out to create the original adaptation that Masque is performing. The all-star cast of Shauna "The beautiful Belisa…" Malone, Hilary "What's a matter with you?" Hayes, Diane "Oh my, pure sugar!" Jordan, Katie "Giggle-giggle." Archer, and William "(Deeper) Giggle-giggle" Woerter, is led by the immensely talented Marc "So you did… Grapes!" Cryan in the lead-role of Perlimplín. This cast is under the expert direction of Masque president Sue "Karate girl from Nobody Knows You're a Dog" Foss.

It is a great production of a play by one of the greatest playwrights of our era, be sure not to miss it! Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. The production is a double billing and will be performing with WPI's Guerilla Improv at 8 pm on February 8th - 10th in Alden Hall. Tickets can be reserved by emailing megellen@wpi.edu
