The Indian Students Organization at WPI had set up an earthquake relief fund raising drive to aid the victims of the disastrous earthquake that hit the Northwest region of India on January 26th, 2001, claiming more than 30,000 lives and leaving thousands of others injured and homeless. The drive, which was conducted from February 1st to February 8th, 2001, raised an amount of $3,000. Collection booths were set up at prime locations on campus on the above-mentioned days. These funds will be handed over to the American Red Cross, which has made a separate allocation for the Gujarat quake relief.
This drive would have been impossible without the help of several volunteers from the ISO student body, the cooperation of the students, staff and faculty at WPI. The generous contribution made towards the funds was remarkable and the concern expressed by all was overwhelming.
The WPI SocCom are further assisting the ISO in their drive by donating the proceeds of the Sunday Night (February 10, 2001) movie towards the relief funds. The Tatnuck Bookstore @WPI has also come forward and generously contributed by donating their week's popcorn sale proceeds.
The ISO team has done an outstanding job in working for this noble cause. For more information about the drive, visit the ISO website: http://www.wpi.edu/~iso or contact the organization at iso@wpi.edu.
