Appalachia in Worcester

The 21st annual Appalachia in Worcester Project sponsored by the WPI Newman Club will take place on Monday, March 12th, this year. Due to the format of term D this year, the project will be limited to one day.

Every spring vacation the Newman Club sponsors a project of manual labor to help unfortunate people in our city. In the past we have renovated apartments, homeless shelters, etc. in the city.

This year our project is to renovate part of Saint Anthony's Closet in south Worcester. Saint Anthony's is one of the largest so-called thrift shops in the city. Here people can select clothing for themselves and their children for the cost of one dollar per item. Even that one-dollar charge is often waived in order to help families. Much of the clothing is brand new having been bought in lots at the end of various store clearances. You can imagine the joy of a low-income mother who can outfit herself and her children for no more than a dollar or two. Imagine the self-pride of youngsters going to school dressed as well as anyone else.

On Monday, March 12th, volunteers will leave from the Religious Center at 9:00 a.m., report to St. Anthony's and return to campus about 4:00 p.m. Lunch is provided and usually in the evening the volunteers go to a local restaurant for pizza - guests of Father Scanlon.

If you wish to help in this humanitarian project, please email Jason Field (fielder@wpi.edu) or Father Scanlon (priest@wpi.edu). Also if you want more information, email either of these two people. Anyone can volunteer. You do not have to be a Newman Club member to participate. Helping people not as fortunate as we are is a great way to start out term D.
