Campus Hearing Board Election

by John Baird
Class of 2004

Campus Hearing Board elections are coming up and time for registration has come.

Campus Hearing Board is an elected body of undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty who act like a Supreme Court. It's their job to rule on matters of academic dishonesty, harassment, and other violations. The board can determine punishment for violations.

The Campus Hearing Board meets on an as-needed basis rather than regularly. One year, the board met 6 times, but the next year it never had to meet. Student members have a chance to work with faculty and acquaint themselves with the rules governing the student body.

In order to run, students need to pick up a petition from the Student Government office, room 313 in the Campus Center, and write a letter of candidacy. Forms can be picked up starting March 20 and are due on March 29 by 5 p.m. at the SGA office. Students who run should expect to have photos taken on either March 29 or March 30.

Undergraduate students elect two students and a faculty member, as well as three reserve students. By voting, students have the chance to choose the candidates they think will be most fair in deciding cases.

For elections there will be both web and paper voting. Web voting will begin April 5 at 2 p.m. and end April 9 at midnight. Students can use their UNIX account to vote. Ballots will be available April 9 and 10 at three locations: main lobby of the Campus Center, the Wedge, and, weather permitting, the fountain. The first two locations will be open April 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. respectively. The table will be at the fountain April 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. Results will be posted by the next day in the SGA office.
