Nomar Garciaparra felt some soreness in his injured right wrist after hitting off a tee, but said he expected some pain.
"A few days before, I wouldn't even try to attempt that," he said Saturday, a day after taking swings for the first time since the start of spring training. "That's progress."
The All Star shortstop dismissed reports that he was more likely to have surgery.
"I'm already cut," Garciaparra joked, pointing to a scratch on his wrist.
"If I was having surgery, I wouldn't be in here working out," he said.
Surgery is a last resort, he said. Garciaparra had a cast removed last week and has been throwing and exercising the wrist in an attempt to be ready for opening day on April 2.
"We're doing this stuff all week and if my wrist is going to be fine I'll be playing," he said. "We'll work it out. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and (the wrist) is going to let me know."
