WPI appoints two senior executives to Board of Trustees

WORCESTER, Mass.- Worcester Polytechnic Institute recently elected senior executives of Cadkey Corp. and Pfizer Inc. to its Board of Trustees. Elected were Karen L. (Rombousek) Bean of Shrewsbury, Mass., chief operating officer of Cadkey, and John L. LaMattina of Groton, Conn., executive vice president of Pfizer Global Research and Development and president of worldwide research at Pfizer Global R & D.
A native of Goshen, N.Y., Bean received a bachelor's degree from Worcester State College and an MBA from WPI. She and her husband, Robert '82, '85 (M.S.), founded Baystate Technologies in 1989. After Baystate acquired the Cadkey product line in 1996, the couple changed their company's name to identify it with its products. The firm manufactures and markets productivity-enhanced computer-aided design software for personal computers worldwide.
Before co-founding Baystate Technologies, Karen Bean was employed at The Medical Center of Central Massachusetts (now UMass Memorial Health Care-Memorial Campus) as a strategic planner focusing on business development, facilities planning, acquisitions and mergers.
She is currently vice president of the advisory board of the Glavin Center, treasurer of Shrewsbury Community Services, and a member of the Shrewsbury Rotary Club and WPI's Management Advisory Board. She is active in pediatric cancer fund raising for Boston Children's and UMass-Memorial hospitals.
LaMattina holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Boston College and a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of New Hampshire. He joined Pfizer's Medicinal Chemistry Department as a research scientist in 1977 after completing a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and holds 14 U.S. patents.
He chairs WPI's Chemistry and Biochemistry Advisory Board and serves on the board of directors of Anaderm Corp. He was previously a member of the Apothecary Board of Florida A & M University.
