At our Executive Board meeting this past Wednesday night, our president, Jim Koniers announced the election results for next year's officers. The results were as follows: President, Michael A. DiDonato, Vice Presidents, Nicholas J. Nassar, Christopher M. O' Malley and Eric P. McDonough, Secretary, Stephanie M. Carney, Treasurer, Erin E. O'Shea, Sergeant at Arms, Ryan Petti. The chairpersons will be selected this coming week. Installation of the new officers and chairpersons will be Sunday, April 22nd. Our Day of Retreat last Saturday, March 31st at the Religious Center went well. Everyone enjoyed our C-Term Sunday breakfast last Sunday, April 1st after the 11:30 Mass. We have made arrangements to partake in Quadfest with a St. Patrick's Pub. Come and see what it is. Our faith and Discussion Group continues to meet every Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. in the Religious Center.
I hope that all of you are having a great D Term! May God our Savior be forever praised, for out of his great love and mercy he gave his one and only son, Jesus Christ, so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life! This week we will have Tuesday Night Prayer tonight at 9:30 in Founders 204 and Friday Night Fellowship at 7:00 in the lower wedge. We also have a special event this week. Paul Copan will be giving a talk at 7:30 Tuesday in the Odeum of the new Campus Center. The topic of his talk is "Why You Don't *Really* Want to Be a Relativist." Come to the talk, and bring a friend!
This past week was amazing! Our film festival went off without a hitch and got a great turnout, especially towards the end. It was a fun time for everyone who came. We would like to thank Minority Affairs and Outreach as well as SocComm for co-sponsoring with us. The festival would not have been possible without their support. Also, mark you calendars for our open meeting which will be April 20th on the quad. This past week a few of us went over to Holy Cross for their annual Safe Person/Safe Space training, which focuses on training and educating straight allies on GLBT issues. We are going to try and create a similar program for WPI, so let us know if you are interested as well as possible ways to make BiLaGA more inclusive of straight allies. For more information, check out Holy Cross' Safe Space website link:http://carver.holycross.edu/studentorgs/abigale/missionmain.htm This Tuesday evening at 8p.m. we are holding our support group, email us for the location. On Thursday, our business meeting will be held at 8p.m. in Morgan C, which anyone can come to. For more information, contact us at bilaga@wpi.edu
The move into the new office is complete! SGA is now located in room 313 in the Campus Center! Our meetings will be held from now on in the War Room (a.k.a. the Hagglund Room) on the third floor at their usual time, 6 p.m. every Tuesday. Anyone is welcome to listen in on our proceedings. Congratulations to Russell Bozek, who was made Vice President for D Term! Everyone is sure he will do a fine job. Congratulations are also in order for Allison Schafer, Reshma Shaikh, Brett Holmes, Colin Pacell, James Partridge, Paul Whitford, David Campbell, Dennis Mayo, and Matt Turner who are all newly appointed for D Term. There is some bad news, however: Robert Pantazelos was removed from the senate this past week. In his place, Conor Walsh and Sopan Shah will be chairing the committees he's departed. SGA has approved the organization budgets for next year. The Committee on Student Life Issues is pleased to announce that points will be accepted at Tortilla Sams and Dominoes next year. We will also be investigating why prices at the Campus Center are so high, the changes in the Daka meal plans, and trying to put in place speaking tests for professors to ensure adequate communication skills among WPI faculty. The Committee on Academic Issues will also be handling a second attempt at a WPI Honor Code.
New England has become one of the largest hotspots for Fencing teams! Many colleges in the region have fencers who have been practicing since their years in high school, and their outstanding performance shows it! On Saturday, February 24th, WPI participated in the annual New England Fencing Championships at Smith College in Northampton. We were accompanied by Coaches Dave Brown and Arut Akskalyan. Unlike the previous competition we reported, our Fencing Club had a full team and stood at an even standpoint with the other colleges. Other teams there were Dartmouth College, Hampshire College, UMASS, Boston College, Brown University, Boston University, University of New Hampshire, Vassar College, MIT, and Tufts. Also there was the all-women's team from Wellesley, who was paired with our all-men's team in competition with other mixed teams. The following members participated in the meet in the order of First String, Second String, and Third String, respectively: Sabre: Greg Kronenberger (ECE'03), Peter Kast (ME'04), Pat Groulx (MA'04). Epee: Rick Ballard (CS'04), Ian Hobbs (CS'02), Dale Moyer (CS'04). Foil: Turin Pollard (EE'03), Jeff Rosenberger (CS'04), John Chrzanowski (CS'04). After the competition ended, Dale was chosen to be the MVP for the day. Great job Dale! Although the team consisted of mostly Freshmen, the team fenced excellent matches, and everyone enjoyed themselves. With the next New England Championships approaching in a year, the team is now beginning to practice in order to do even better next time. Coach Brown would like to remind all students interested in joining the Fencing Club to sign up in A Term of next year. You can find more information at http://www.wpi.edu/~fencing/.
